We&#8217;re looking at Prom 53, taking place today, Friday 30 August, and featuring works by Stravinsky and Tippett, plus a UK premiere of a new work by American composer <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/steve-reich\">Steve Reich<\/a><\/strong>. And, if you want all the 2024 Proms at a glance, our <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/bbc-proms\/2024-bbc-proms-listings\">2024 BBC Proms guide<\/a><\/strong> is the place to go.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-s-on-at-the-bbc-proms-today\">What&#8217;s on at the BBC Proms today?<\/h2><p>Prom 53 (Friday 30 August) opens with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/igor-stravinsky\">Igor Stravinsky<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s Symphony in Three Movements. Composed from 1943 to 1945, this work was described by Stravinsky as his &#8216;War Symphony&#8217;, and it&#8217;s one of the major classical works to come out of World War II. <\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/what-happened-to-classical-musicians-during-world-war-2\">What happened to classical musicians during World War II?<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>You can hear some key Stravinsky styles within the piece, such as prominent <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/instruments\/woodwind-instruments\">woodwinds<\/a><\/strong>, tangy <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-harmony-in-music\">harmonies<\/a><\/strong>, and sudden changes in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-a-time-signature\">time signature<\/a><\/strong>. The third movement, with its strident brass writing and propulsive march rhythms, is an attack on the rise of Fascism. <\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/stravinskys-ballets-a-guide-to-all-his-masterpieces\">All 12 Stravinsky ballets, ranked<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>That&#8217;s followed by a UK premiere: <em>Jacob\u2019s Ladder <\/em>by Steve Reich. A BBC co-commission, <em>Jacob\u2019s Ladder<\/em>\u00a0sets Biblical texts describing Jacob\u2019s vision of a ladder between Heaven and Earth, with angels ascending and descending. Around 20 minutes long, it features choir and orchestra. &#8216;Burbles with a steady, propulsive rush\u2026 Energetic while meditative \u2026 light, graceful, refreshing,. praised the <em>New York Times<\/em>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Steve Reich\u00a0: Jacob's Ladder\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Yjzw-l4nxWg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>After the interval, we have the &#8216;Ritual Dances&#8217; from Michael Tippett&#8217;s opera <em>The Midsummer Marriage<\/em>. Tippett modelled his 1954 opera on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/mozart\"><strong>Mozart<\/strong>&#8216;<\/a>s <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/recordings\/best-recordings-mozart-magic-flute\">The Magic Flute<\/a><\/strong><\/em>. Then comes the evening&#8217;s showpiece: Elgar&#8217;s magnificent, endlessly inventive <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/best-recordings-elgars-enigma-variations\"><em>Enigma<\/em> Variations<\/a><\/strong>. <\/p><p>Composed between 1898 and 1899 and officially known as Variations on an Original Theme, Op. 36, the <em>Enigma<\/em> Variations is a set of 14 variations on a theme (the latter opens the work). Ingeniously and movingly, each variation is dedicated to, and in some way depicts, one of Elgar&#8217;s friends or family members.<\/p><p>&#8216;Enigma&#8217; means mystery or riddle, and Elgar himself suggested that there was a hidden theme that runs through the variations. He never revealed what this was, and over the years musicologists and others have speculated at length. Here are <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/five-theories-unsolved-mystery-elgars-enigma-variations\">five theories for the meaning behind the <em>Enigma<\/em> Variations<\/a><\/strong>. Away from this fascinating hidden aspect, the piece is justly famous for its emotional depth, rich orchestration, and ingenious way of encapsulating each character in music.<\/p><p>The <em>Enigma&#8217;<\/em>s most famous movement is undoubtedly &#8216;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/a-guide-to-nimrod-from-elgars-enigma-variations\">Nimrod<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;, whose solemn and profoundly moving atmosphere has made it a firm favourite, often played at funerals and remembrance services. <\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Elgar: Enigma Variations 'Nimrod' | Academy of St Martin in the Fields, Sir Neville Marriner\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Cn9oXU8k5qE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-who-is-performing-at-the-bbc-proms-today\">Who is performing at the BBC Proms today?<\/h2><p>Today&#8217;s performers for Prom 53 are the BBC Symphony Orchestra and conductor Martyn Brabbins.
