Here’s a brief guide to Die Meistersinger von N\u00fcrnberg<\/em>, one of the few uplifting and even comic operas in the canon of the great German opera composer Richard Wagner<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>

What’s the plot of Die Meistersinger von N\u00fcrnberg<\/em> by Wagner?<\/h2>
In 16th-century Nuremberg, the goldsmith Pogner causes a stir by announcing that he is to hold a song contest with the hand of his daughter, Eva, as first prize. Walther, a young knight who is in love with Eva, decides to take part, despite not belonging to the town\u2019s guild of mastersingers.<\/p>
<\/div><\/figure><p>His effort is ruled out on technical grounds by Beckmesser, who also has his eye on Eva. Beckmesser\u2019s own song gets sabotaged by Hans Sachs, the most famous mastersinger of all, who then helps Walther to win the contest. <\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/guide-wagners-die-walkure\/\"><strong>A guide to Wagner’s <em>Die Walk\u00fcre<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-wagner-s-longest-work\">Wagner’s longest work<\/h2><p>With three unperformed and immense operas on his desk, Wagner decided, in the early 1860s, to write a comedy, a compact work which would immediately earn him some desperately needed cash. Although the end of his political ban had at last seen him move back to Germany, times had otherwise been hard and his financial situation perilous.<\/p><p>Scarcely had he begun <em>Die Meistersinger<\/em>, though, his fortunes took a considerable upturn with the succession of Ludwig II to the throne of Bavaria \u2013 a major champion of his music, Ludwig also paid off Wagner\u2019s debts at a stroke.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/wagner-ring-cycle\">Greed, lust and corruption: why Wagner\u2019s epic Ring Cycle is still the greatest show on earth<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>And so, in 1867, emerged the longest score that had ever been published, a work which lasts four and a half hours. People are often surprised that Wagner wrote \u2013 could write \u2013 a comedy, but they ignore how much humour, usually sly, there is in most of his other works.<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/20-best-operas-all-time\"><strong>The 20 Greatest Operas of all time<\/strong><\/a><\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-wagner-meistersinger-not-primarily-a-comedy\">Wagner <em>Meistersinger<\/em>: ‘Not primarily a comedy’<\/h2><p>Anyway, <em>Die Meistersinger <\/em>is not primarily a comedy. It concerns, once more, the relationship that might or can exist between an unusually demanding individual and the community of which he wants to become a part \u2013 so long as it accepts him for what he is. That gives Wagner the chance to celebrate the great German tradition of music from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/topic\/js-bach\"><strong>Bach<\/strong><\/a> through to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/topic\/ludwig-van-beethoven\"><strong>Beethoven<\/strong><\/a>: there is ceaseless counterpoint and a general delight in musical showing-off in <em>Die Meistersinger<\/em>. <\/p><ul><li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/article\/guide-wagners-der-fliegende-hollander\"><strong>A guide to Wagner’s Der fliegende H\u00f6llander<\/strong><\/a> <\/li><\/ul><p>The opera really has two heroes: the impetuous headstrong young knight Walther von Stolzing, who arrives in Nuremberg and upsets the Masters who legislate the rules of composition; and Hans Sachs, himself a Master, but the only one who realises that tradition needs constantly to be renewed if it is not to grow stale, so that the individual genius can make his fellows aware of fresh possibilities.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-singing-competition-with-a-glittering-prize\">A singing competition with a glittering prize<\/h2><p>Wagner\u2019s plot \u2013 a brilliant one, and wholly of his own devising \u2013 plays this contrast out in terms of a song competition, with the heroine Eva\u2019s hand as the prize. She is loved, or at least wanted, by Sachs, who has known her all her life; by Walther, who naturally fell in love with her at first sight; and by Beckmesser, the archetype of all pedants, who wants to woo her with a song which conforms to all the strictest rules. Beneath that, in Sachs\u2019s great monologue in Act III, we learn that the whole thing, the whole world, is illusion, and that the most we can settle for is choosing consoling illusions, such as love, over wretched ones. So <em>Die Meistersinger<\/em>, like all the greatest comedies, conceals a depressing view of things beneath laughter and celebration, all set to the most glorious music.<\/p><p>Unlike many of Wagner’s other works, <em>Die Meistersinger<\/em> does not delve into mythology. Instead, it portrays everyday human experiences. Ultimately, this makes for a more accessible work. That said, that typically Wagnerian grandeur and depth are still much in evidence. It remains at the core of the opera repertoire, and is a brilliant illustration of the composer’s unique gift for mixing profound philosophical concepts with gripping drama and the most beautiful musical themes.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-is-die-meistersinger-by-wagner-so-popular\">Why is <em>Die Meistersinger <\/em>by Wagner so popular?<\/h2><p>One of the key features of <em>Die Meistersinger<\/em> is its celebration of German art and tradition. The famous mastersinger Hans Sachs acts as a sort of embodiment of the high ideals of wisdom, kindness, and artistic integrity. <\/p><p>In musical terms, <em>Die Meistersinger<\/em> <em>von N\u00fcrnberg <\/em>is a rich showcase for Wagner’s gift with signature tunes or <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-a-leitmotif\">leitmotifs<\/a><\/strong>, which also feature strongly in so many other Wagner operas such as <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/guide-wagner-siegfried\">Siegfried<\/a><\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/guide-wagners-lohengrin\">Lohengrin<\/a><\/strong><\/em>. The opera’s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-overture\">overture<\/a><\/strong> is much admired for its typically powerful orchestration and for the sophistication of the themes it lays out. <\/p><p>At around four and a half hours long, <em>Die Meistersinger<\/em> is one of the longest operas in the standard repertory. It’s arguably not its length, however, for which the work is renowned.
