So what is the meaning of the <em>Enigma<\/em> by Elgar? The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/bbc-symphony-orchestra\">BBC Symphony Orchestra<\/a><\/strong> will be playing this masterpiece as they close out <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/news\/bbc-proms-today-30-august-2024\">Prom 53<\/a><\/strong> (Fri 30 Aug).<\/p><ul><li><strong><a class=\"standard-card-new__article-title\" href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/what-are-variations\/\">What are&#8230; variations in music?<\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/greatest-musical-variations\">The 7 greatest musical variations ever written<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-the-meaning-of-the-enigma-by-elgar-five-theories\">What is the meaning of the Enigma by Elgar? Five theories<\/h2><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-auld-lang-syne\">1. <strong>Auld Lang Syne<\/strong><\/h3><p> A long-time favourite of the counterpoint theorists, who feel the solution lies with a melody that can be played at the same time as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/topic\/edward-elgar\"><strong>Elgar<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s original theme. Beethoven\u2019s \u2018Path\u00e9tique\u2019 Sonata<\/strong><\/h3><p> Combining counterpoint and connectivism, another favourite is the central slow movement of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/ludwig-van-beethoven\">Beethoven<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s Piano Sonata No. 8, the \u2018Path\u00e9tique\u2019.
