A long career as a church organist accompanying the burial services of countless Parisians left the composer with a more philosophical attitude to death.<\/strong><\/p><p>He described his Requiem as having \u2018a very human feeling of faith in eternal rest\u2019, and indeed, its remarkable modesty and unusual tenderness provide a stark contrast to the grandiloquent solemnity that defines so many other Requiem settings. This is not the fire-and-brimstone worlds of the Requiems of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/mozart\">Mozart<\/a><\/strong> or <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/giuseppe-verdi\">Verdi<\/a><\/strong>, but something far more serene and accepting. As such, among all the Requiems, it&#8217;s probably closer to the reflective mood of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/johannes-brahms\">Brahms<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/recordings\/brahmss-a-german-requiem-guide-and-its-best-recordings\">Ein Deutsches Requiem<\/a><\/strong><\/em> (<em>A German Requiem<\/em>).<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/recordings\/verdis-requiem-best-recordings\">Verdi&#8217;s Requiem: the best recordings<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>The omission of a \u2018Dies Irae\u2019 is telling of his attempt to do something different, and two of the final seven movements \u2013 \u2018Hostias\u2019 and \u2018<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/libera-me-lyrics\/\">Libera me<\/a><\/strong>\u2019 \u2013 weren\u2019t added until 1893. The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/bbc-symphony-orchestra\">BBC Symphony Orchestra<\/a><\/strong> and soloists including soprano Golda Schultz will perform this magnificent work as part of the all-French <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/news\/bbc-proms-today-4-september-2024\">Prom 59<\/a><\/strong> on Wednesday 4 September.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The best recording of Faur\u00e9&#8217;s Requiem<\/h2><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Corydon Singers\/English Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Matthew Best (1987<\/strong>) <\/h3><p>Hyperion CDA66292<\/p><p>In this modest interpretation, faithful to the 1893 edition, Matthew Best commands an immaculate performance from the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singers.com\/choral\/corydonsingers.html\">Corydon Singers<\/a><\/strong>. Wonderful accounts of the solos from soprano <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hyperion-records.co.uk\/a.asp?a=A328\"><strong>Mary Seers<\/strong><\/a> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hyperion-records.co.uk\/a.asp?a=A72\">Michael George<\/a><\/strong> blend perfectly into the undemonstrative aesthetic. Our reviewer Roger Nichols also notes that this recording can also claim some considerable historical interest: it&#8217;s a reconstruction of the first complete performance of the work, at Paris&#8217;s Madeleine church in 1888. After that, the work underwent various changes. So, we hear the Requiem as the composer first intended it. Other strings to this disc&#8217;s considerable bow include the beautiful period brass of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and the celestial voices of the Choir of King&#8217;s College, Cambridge &#8211; one of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/worlds-best-choirs\">world&#8217;s best choirs<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/dp\/B00L5J4Q5K\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Buy from Amazon<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Sixteen\/Academy of St Martin in the Fields, conducted by Harry Christophers (2007<\/strong>)<\/h3><p>Coro COR16057<\/p><p>Despite using the full orchestral version, there is an intimate feel to this live recording from stalwarts of church repertoire <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/the-sixteen\">The Sixteen<\/a><\/strong> and their partners in crime at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.asmf.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">St Martin-in-the-Fields<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p><p>Harry Christophers uses brisk tempos to depict a sense of illumination and delight, and the deep affinity for Faur\u00e9\u2019s elusive medium makes this perhaps the greatest rendition of the 1901 version of the Faur\u00e9 Requiem. <\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/dp\/B0013HFP0Y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Buy from Amazon<\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prestomusic.com\/classical\/products\/7962587--faure-requiem\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Buy from Presto Classical<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify wp-embed-aspect-21-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: Faur\u00e9 Requiem\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"100%\" height=\"352\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/album\/4sUrAUPfMfTesEhk1soo9U?utm_source=oembed&amp;go=1&amp;play=1&amp;nd=1&amp;nd=1\"\/><\/div><\/figure><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/verdis-requiem-guide\/\"><strong>A quick guide to Verdi&#8217;s Requiem<\/strong><\/a> <\/li><\/ul><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>La Chapelle Royale\/Ensemble Musique Oblique, conducted by Philippe Herreweghe (1988<\/strong>)<\/h3><p>Harmonia Mundi HMG 501292<\/p><p>For this, arguably the most \u2018authentic\u2019 version of the Faur\u00e9 Requiem, Herreweghe managed to procure manuscripts for an updated version of the 1983 \u2018chamber\u2019 score, which placed heavier impetus on the horns.<\/p><p>The use of boy trebles adds a layer of cherubic purity to the already excellent sound of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bach-cantatas.com\/Bio\/Chapelle-Royale.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>La Chapelle Royale<\/strong><\/a>, and soloists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.warnerclassics.com\/artist\/agnes-mellon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Agn\u00e8s Mellon<\/strong><\/a> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.warnerclassics.com\/artist\/peter-kooy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Peter Kooy<\/a><\/strong> provide wonderful accounts of the solos.
