This is a state of physical, mental and emotional exhaustion. It can occur when you experience long-term stress and feel under constant pressure. <\/p><p>You need to recognise the signs ahead, in order to take evasive action. But here is what I\u2019ve learned\u2026<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Work with people you trust and can be open with<\/h2><p>One crucial thing in avoiding burnout is finding the best partners to work with. How do you know who these are? Trial and error, unfortunately. I have come close to burnout working with people who don\u2019t know what they want to achieve, who use you as a kind of experiment, or who don\u2019t listen to your opinions or questions.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/science-of-music\/music-and-mental-health\">Music and mental health: what science has revealed about the connections between them<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>We make the best music with the people we trust and can be ourselves with. All of my close <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-chamber-music\">chamber music<\/a><\/strong> collaborators are extremely open, lovely people and we all share some fundamental human truths \u2013 trauma, anxiety, whatever. It\u2019s a great stress relief too: if I\u2019m feeling anxious, I\u2019ll go for a run. <\/p><p>Another major reliever of stress is my dog, Maurice, a long-haired dachshund!\u00a0<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/science-of-music\/music-impact-on-the-body\">Reduced stress, healthy heart&#8230; and 5 other surprising benefits that music will give you<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Avoiding burnout&#8230; take time out to rest<\/h2><p>Last but not least: rest. Of course we are all hugely busy nearly all of the time. But it\u2019s so important to have, every year, some time when you\u2019re simply not performing. <\/p><p>I had some cancellations earlier this year and thought about trying to fill the time. Instead, I took nearly four months off \u2013 much more than I had taken in the previous few years combined.
