A classical background…<\/h2>
People know Quincy Jones for producing three landmark Michael Jackson<\/a><\/strong> albums \u2013 Off the Wall <\/em>(1979), Thriller <\/em>(1982) and Bad<\/em> (1987). What they may not know is that, long before this, Jones studied formally in Paris with the great Nadia Boulanger, who also taught the likes of Daniel Barenboim<\/a><\/strong>, Aaron Copland<\/a><\/strong> and Philip Glass<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>

Jones spent a year in Paris with Boulanger, studying classical music. That\u2019s where he really got into orchestration, and in the sixties he started a jazz big band, the Jones Boys. They were so good that when the legendary bandleader Count Basie heard them, he said, \u2018Please don\u2019t come to the States! You will put me out of business!\u2019\u00a0<\/p>
<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Metropole Orkest conducted by Jules Buckley perform ‘Stuff like that’ at the Quincy Jones Prom in 2016.<\/figcaption><\/figure><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/listen\/why-isnt-the-vinyl-trend-crossing-over-to-the-classical-music-market\">Why isn’t the vinyl trend crossing over to the classical music market?<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A multi-talented composer, arranger and producer<\/h2><p>Jones then worked as an arranger for the likes of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/news\/bbc-proms-28-july-2024\">Sarah Vaughan<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/who-is-ella-fitzgerald\">Ella Fitzgerald<\/a><\/strong> and Frank Sinatra. That was the moment when he really came to light as a composer and arranger. It was his arrangement of<em> \u2018<\/em>Fly Me to the Moon\u2019, performed by Sinatra and Basie\u2019s band, that was played on Apollo 11 before the first moon landing. He was also one of the first black Americans to break into film scores, most famously for<em> The Color Purple<\/em>, on which he was composer and co-producer. So there\u2019s so much fascinating stuff to the Quincy Jones story: the producing, composing, arranging and orchestrating. I picked up his autobiography in a bookshop and could not put it down. He inspired me to do music, but there is so much within that.
