Baroque. Er… Classical? (That last one is a confusing term, which we’ll dive into further below). How well do you know your classical music eras? Could you pinpoint when the Baroque era drew to a close, and the music’s Classical chapter ushered its graceful way onto the stage?

We can, by and large, divide the history of classical music into seven major eras, each with their own stylistic characteristics, innovations, offshoot movements and star names. There were noisemakers, though… percussion and wind instruments can of course be traced back to early humans – actual horns, bone flutes and alike – but they became more advanced. Classical music kind of comes into its own during this time, the forms, structures and techniques we are familiar with today are set out in the Baroque.

Major and minor keys are used (instead of ‘modes’), notation systems are updated, forms (like the fugue) developed and a little thing called the orchestra rears its head.
