At school, meanwhile, Martin&#8217;s interest in classical music was further fuelled by a visit from the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/the-london-symphony-orchestra-five-famous-conductors\">London Symphony Orchestra<\/a><\/strong> and their conductor Adrian Boult.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"John Lennon on George Martin - (c) BBC 1975\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lrRl065BR2w?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>After serving in the Royal Navy during World War Two, Martin consolidated his grounding in music, studying composition, conducting and orchestration at the Guildhall School of Music. He also took up the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/instruments\/oboe-vs-clarinet\">oboe<\/a><\/strong> to \u2018earn a bit of living\u2019 \u2013 in later years, he cited Mozart\u2019s Oboe Quartet, K370 as one of his favourite pieces.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How George Martin added classical music into The Beatles&#8217;s irresistible soundworld<\/strong><\/h2><p>Martin spent a brief time after his graduation working in the BBC\u2019s classical music department, before his move to Parlophone records in London (a subsidiary of EMI) in 1950. At this time, he developed an interest in comedy recordings. In one of these, the actor Peter Ustinov sang in a &#8216;mock&#8217; Mozartian opera style (see below).<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Beatles Interviews: Meeting George Martin and Ringo Joining The Band\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/h3AY1CVUgJw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>Martin&#8217;s work with The Beatles, whom he famously signed in 1962, saw him gradually introduce classical music elements into their recordings, beginning with a string quartet arrangement to accompany Paul McCartney\u2019s song \u2018Yesterday\u2019 in 1965. He later developed more complex orchestrations, including the famous <em>glissando<\/em> performed by a 41-piece orchestra in \u2018A Day in The Life\u2019 on the 1967 album <em>Sgt. Pepper\u2019s Lonely Heart\u2019s Club Band.<\/em><\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/composer-anders-hillborg-on-creating-synthetic-sounds-studying-under-brian-ferneyhough-and-the-influence-of-the-beatles\">Composer Anders Hillborg on creating synthetic sounds and the influence of The Beatles<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>Martin was no mean composer himself, as displayed in his cleverly constructed score for <em>Yellow Submarine<\/em> film in 1968 \u2013 as well as quoting <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/johann-sebastian-bach\">JS Bach<\/a><\/strong>, the score also showed touches of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/igor-stravinsky\">Stravinsky<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/gustav-holst\">Holst<\/a><\/strong>. His work as a composer included writing for classical guitarist John Williams and the Medici Quartet.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tchaikovsky to the Mahavishnu Orchestra &#8211; Martin&#8217;s eclectic musical universe<\/strong><\/h2><p>In the 1990s, Martin made a recording of songs by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/george-gershwin\">George Gershwin<\/a><\/strong>, featuring bass-baritone <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/sir-willard-white\">Willard White<\/a><\/strong> while, in 2002, he curated a series of discs called \u2018Sir George Martin Presents\u2019 focusing on different composers, including Mozart, Holst and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/ralph-vaughan-williams\">Vaughan Williams<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/ludwig-van-beethoven\">Beethoven<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/50-greatest-composers-all-time\">The 50 greatest composers of all time<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"George Martin: The Fifth Beatle\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WscjZkIYjr8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>As for his own favourites? On a 1996 episode of <em>Desert Island Discs,<\/em> Martin picked <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/tchaikovsky\">Tchaikovsky<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s <em>Romeo and Juliet<\/em> overture, calling it \u2018one of the greatest pieces of love music ever written&#8217;. He also regarded the 1974 album <em>Apocalypse<\/em> by the Mahavishnu Orchestra \u2013 featuring conductor Michael Tilson Thomas and the London Symphony Orchestra with guitarist John McLaughlin, and produced by Martin \u2013 as \u2018one of the best albums he ever made.\u2019<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/romeo-and-juliet-music\">Six of the best: musical settings of Shakespeare&#8217;s <em>Romeo and Juliet<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/classical-music-inspired-shakespeare\">These 11 Shakespeare plays have inspired some of the greatest music ever written<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>George Martin: five classical-leaning recording<\/strong>s<\/h2><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Peter Ustinov \u2013 <em>Mock Mozart<\/em> (1953)<\/strong><\/h3><p>In his early days at Parlophone, Martin produced a run of comedy records, including this gem from 1953 that featured the actor Peter Ustinov and broadcaster Antony Hopkins. Ustinov lampoons various operatic singing styles with earnest, garbled vocals, while Hopkins tinkers away on a harpsichord.<\/p><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"350\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OHfseN9nSVE\" width=\"625\"\/><\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Beatles \u2013 <em>Eleanor Rigby<\/em> (1966)<\/strong><\/h3><p>During the composition of The Beatles&#8217;s iconic <em>Eleanor Rigby<\/em>, when Paul McCartney asked for something in the style of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/antonio-vivaldi\">Vivaldi<\/a><\/strong>, Martin instead based his staccato string arrangement on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/bernard-herrmann\">Bernard Herrmann<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s intense soundtrack to the film <em>Psycho<\/em>. When the piece was recorded, the instruments had microphones placed up close, to pick up the scratching of the strings. This added a spiky texture to the sound.<\/p><ul><li><strong>Bernard Herrmann features on our list of the 10<\/strong> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/top-film-composers-ever\">greatest film composers<\/a><\/strong> <strong>of all time<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Beatles \u2013 <em>Penny Lane<\/em> (1967)<\/strong><\/h3><p>Martin made increasing use of classical references in his work with The Beatles. The band\u2019s single \u2018Penny Lane\u2019, for instance, features a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/baroque-music-guide\">Baroque<\/a><\/strong>-style piccolo trumpet solo, inspired by Bach&#8217;s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/recordings\/best-recordings-js-bachs-brandenburg-concertos\">Brandenburg Concerto No. 2<\/a><\/strong>. This was performed by the then Philharmonia trumpeter David Mason.<\/p><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"350\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/S-rB0pHI9fU\" width=\"625\"\/><\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Beatles \u2013 All You Need Is Love (1967)<\/strong><\/h3><p>Marking a landmark in broadcasting history, the song \u2018All You Need is Love\u2019 was performed to a live TV audience of 400 million people. Martin insisted on the use of a backing track in order to keep the musicians focused, including his studio orchestra. The song begins with a quote from the French national anthem \u2018<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/la-marseillaise-lyrics\">La Marseillaise<\/a><\/strong>\u2019 and during the long fade out at the end, there are quotes from \u2018<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/greensleeves-lyrics\">Greensleeves<\/a><\/strong>\u2019 and JS Bach\u2019s Invention No. 8 in F.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/best-french-composers-ever\">The greatest French composers of all time<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>George Martin \u2013 <em>Three American Sketches<\/em> (1995)<\/strong><\/h3><p>Martin wrote a group of pieces for classical guitarist John Williams and the Medici Quartet. <em>Three American Sketches<\/em>, which Martin humbly described as his \u2018attempt to paint a picture of America\u2019, is a beautiful suite that contains three movements \u2013 \u2018Westward Look\u2019, \u2018Old Boston\u2019 and \u2018New York, New York\u2019.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Three American Sketches: II.
