From the <em>Allegro<\/em>\u2019s post-harvest celebrations in &#8216;Autumn&#8217;, Vivaldi\u2019s programmatic music transports us to the somewhat less vibrant morning after, where slow moving suspensions come as close to a musical hangover as anything you\u2019ve ever heard. In the stately final <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-does-allegro-mean-in-music\">Allegro<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, \u2018The Hunt\u2019, a virtuosic violin solo represents the hunter\u2019s fleeing quarry, which they eventually catch and kill. Not so fun for the quarry, but a jolly old time for all the hunters. <\/p><ul><li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/article\/six-best-pieces-music-firework-night\"><strong>Six of the best pieces for Firework Night<\/strong><\/a><\/li><\/ul><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Astor Piazzolla: &#8216;Autumn&#8217;, from <em>The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires<\/em><\/strong><\/h3><p>From one <em>Four Seasons<\/em> to another. Argentine composer <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/piazzolla-astor\">Astor Piazzolla<\/a><\/strong> is perhaps best known for his reinvention of the tango form, and it&#8217;s heard at its best in <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/piazzollas-four-seasons-of-buenos-aires-a-guide-to-piazzollas-piece-and-its-best-recordings\">The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, in which to Vivaldi&#8217;s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/baroque-music-guide\">Baroque<\/a><\/strong> masterpiece is given a vibrant tango makeover. Unlike Vivaldi\u2019s famous <em>The Four Seasons<\/em>, Piazzolla\u2019s version reflects the urban atmosphere of Buenos Aires and the emotional intensity of the tango, rather than nature.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Astor Piazzolla - The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vsWkXGMonKg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>Piazzolla originally composed these four seasonal evocations for a cabaret band of violin, piano, electric guitar, double bass and bandoneon. This small-scale work was then reimagined as an orchestral suite. Of these, &#8216;Autumn&#8217; has a somewhat melancholic and reflective tone as befits its depiction of the changing of the year.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Bax: <em>November Woods<\/em> (1917)<\/strong><\/h3><p>Though ostensibly inspired by nature, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/arnold-bax\"><strong>Arnold Bax<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s dramatic <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-tone-poem\">tone poem<\/a><\/strong><em> November Woods<\/em> also acts as a musical portrait of his turbulent love affair with pianist Harriet Cohen. An often unsettling work, <em>November Woods<\/em> fluctuates between stormy drama and quiet ecstasy, yet fades to a quiet and unresolved finish. <\/p><ul><li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/article\/best-recording-winterreise\"><strong>What are the best recordings of Schubert&#8217;s <em>Winterreise<\/em>?<\/strong><\/a> <\/li><\/ul><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Fanny Mendelssohn: <em>Das Jahr<\/em> (1841)<\/strong><\/h3><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/fanny-mendelssohn\"><strong>Fanny Mendelssohn<\/strong><\/a> wrote the piano cycle <em>Das Jahr<\/em> as a musical diary of the year she spent with her family in Rome. The 12 months are represented by 12 individual movements. In &#8216;September&#8217; a flowing accompaniment overlays a dark <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-a-melody\">melody<\/a><\/strong> in the left hand. &#8216;October&#8217; is a brighter, march-like song, but &#8216;November&#8217; returns to introspection and a minor key. Strauss also includes a poignant and wistful solo for his father\u2019s instrument: the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/the-history-of-the-french-horn\">French horn<\/a><\/strong>. <\/p><ul><li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/article\/best-recordings-holsts-planets\"><strong>The best recording&#8217;s of Holst&#8217;s <em>The Planets<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/li><\/ul><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tchaikovsky: &#8216;Autumn&#8217; from <em>The Seasons<\/em><\/strong><\/h3><p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/tchaikovsky\">Tchaikovsky<\/a><\/strong> is best known for his<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-symphony\">symphonies<\/a> <\/strong>(including the mighty, mournful <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/tchaikovsky-pathetique-symphony\">Path\u00e9tique<\/a><\/em><\/strong>) and ballets (<strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/the-nutcracker\">The Nutcracker<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/guide-swan-lake\">Swan Lake<\/a><\/em><\/strong>)&#8230; in short, for composing on a large scale. But he did write some beautiful smaller works too &#8211; <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-chamber-music\">chamber music<\/a><\/strong> gems such as the Piano Trio and the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/string-quartet\">string quartet<\/a><\/strong> &#8216;Souvenir de Florence&#8217;. <\/p><p>Then there&#8217;s <em>The Seasons<\/em>, a set of 12 short piano pieces, each depicting, you&#8217;ve guessed it, a different month of the year. The work was originally commissioned by a Russian music magazine, who each month published the relevant piano miniature alongside poetic offerings from Russian writers. <em>The Seasons<\/em> may not be on the scale of the works mentioned above, yet it still captures Tchaikovsky\u2019s prodigious lyrical gifts and ability to conjure vivid atmosphere through music.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"&quot;October - Autumn Song&quot; from Tchaikovsky's &quot;The Seasons&quot; (Olga Scheps live)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/P_faR8r8k4g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>Among the trio of autumnal sketches, September&#8217;s &#8216;The Hunt&#8217; has a vigorous rhythm, evoking the momentum and galloping excitement of a hunt. October gets &#8216;Autumn Song&#8217;, a reflective, somewhat melancholy movement that depicts the last vestiges of summer and the arrival of autumn. We&#8217;re back in festive mood with November&#8217;s &#8216;Troika&#8217;, which evokes the sound of sleigh bells through the snow (a soundworld also famously conjured by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/sergey-prokofiev\">Prokofiev<\/a><\/strong> with the Troika from <em>Lieutenant Kij\u00e9<\/em>). <\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/best-pieces-festive-classical-music\">The best pieces of festive classical music<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Imogen Holst: <em>The Fall of the Leaf<\/em> (1963)<\/strong><\/h3><p>The composer <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/imogen-holst\">Imogen Holst<\/a><\/strong> wrote <em>The Fall of the Leaf<\/em> as a study piece for her friend, the cellist and pianist Pamela Hind O\u2019Malley. It is based on a tune by Martin Peerson that Holst found in the <em>Fitzwilliam Virginal Book<\/em> (1572-1651). Unified by this melody, all six movements expand on it using a variety of different <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/instruments\/string-instruments\">string<\/a><\/strong> techniques, from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-pizzicato\">pizzicato<\/a><\/strong> to double-stopping. <\/p><ul><li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/article\/six-pieces-celebrate-winter\"><strong>Six pieces to celebrate winter<\/strong><\/a><\/li><\/ul><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Massenet: <em>Pens\u00e9e d\u2019Automne <\/em>(1887)<\/strong><\/h3><p>\u2018The year slips away like a flowing stream,\u2019 mourns the soprano soloist in the opening lines of French composer <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/jules-massenet\">Jules Massenet<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s poignant art song <em>Pens\u00e9e d\u2019Automne<\/em> (Thoughts of Autumn). Based on a poem by Armand Silvestre, the song perfectly expresses the melancholy that comes as the summer ends. <\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/the-history-of-french-art-song\">A history of French art song<\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/best-french-composers-ever\">The greatest French composers of all time<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Best classical music for autumn: Takemitsu&#8217;s mountain retreat<\/h2><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>T\u014dru Takemitsu: November Steps<\/strong> <strong>(1967)<\/strong><\/h3><p>One of Japan&#8217;s most famous composers, T\u014dru Takemitsu (1930\u20131996) achieved a unique blend of traditional Japanese music with Western classical techniques, resulting in a deeply atmospheric, transcendent soundworld all his own. Among Western influences, the musical palettes of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/claude-debussy\">Debussy<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/olivier-messiaen\">Messiaen<\/a><\/strong> can both be heard in Takemitsu&#8217;s distinctive sonic universe.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Takemitsu November Steps Dutoit com NHK Salzburgo 2013\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NaGTdSR1o88?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p><em>November Steps<\/em> was a commissioned for the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, to celebrate its 125th anniversary. You probably couldn&#8217;t get further from New York, though, than the remote mountain retreat where Takemitsu composed the work.
