These are works that can evoke a sense of reflection and of vulnerability, offering great solace and sense of connection in times of grief. Here are some of the most eloquent musical evocations of sadness and melancholy from down the centuries. <\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/does-listening-sad-music-actually-make-you-happier\/\">Does listening to sad music actually make you happier?<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-miserere-nostri-by-tallis\"><strong>Saddest classical music<\/strong><\/h2><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-miserere-nostri-by-tallis\"><em><strong>Miserere Nostri<\/strong><\/em> by <strong>Thomas Tallis<\/strong><\/h3><p>Setting just three words \u2013 \u2018Miserere nostri, Domine\u2019 (\u2018Have pity on us, Lord\u2019) \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/thomas-tallis\/\"><strong>Tallis<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s penitential anthem for seven voices is the arguably most perfectly crafted expression of grief ever set down on the musical stave.<\/p><p>Two upper parts soar in canon above four lower parts each of which reflects the same <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-a-melody\/\">melody<\/a><\/strong> but at different tempos or in inversion (the seventh part, the tenor, is more freely composed), to create the most exquisitely, hauntingly doleful three minutes of music imaginable.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Tallis Scholars - Thomas Tallis - Miserere Nostri\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-5W67uBRZCo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>Though it was published in 1575, by which stage Tallis was enduring the misery of plying his trade as a Catholic composer during the fiercely Protestant era of Elizabeth I, <em>Miserere Nostri<\/em> may well in fact have been written several years earlier when the Catholic Mary I was on the throne, so we shouldn\u2019t read too much into the composer\u2019s own circumstances in shaping this most morose of works. Here, in contrast, we one can imagine <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/edward-elgar\/\">Elgar<\/a><\/strong> looking bleakly into the middle distance \u2013 there\u2019s a sense of numbness to the sorrow. Meaning \u2018sighs\u2019 in Italian, <em>Sospiri<\/em> was originally intended by Elgar as a similarly light-hearted companion piece to his <em>Salut d\u2019amour<\/em>, but it soon took on a very different character. Sombre and introspective, it&#8217;s not one to listen to on a wet Monday afternoon.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Edward Elgar - Sospiri op.70\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7uqgv2xsw2o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>The orchestration \u2013 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/instruments\/string-instruments\/\">strings<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/instruments\/what-is-a-harp\/\">harp<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/instruments\/when-was-the-organ-invented\/\">organ<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 is restrained, and there are no great contrasts in dynamic. It is, instead, the very lack of outward emotion that proves so devastatingly moving, the sighs of its title represented by resigned-sounding falling sevenths. That impact is due to the simplicity of the instrumentation and the work\u2019s unhurried climb to what is an exhilarating emotional climax.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Vienna Philharmonic \u2013 Barber: Adagio for Strings, Op.11 (Summer Night Concert 2019)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WAoLJ8GbA4Y?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>Originally written as the second movement of Barber\u2019s 1936 String Quartet, Op. 11, the string arrangement was premiered by Toscanini and the NBC Symphony in 1938. Written for violin and orchestra, the composer had violinist Itzhak Perlman in mind when he first sketched it out, and Perlman performed on the original recording for the film. <\/p><p>The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/violin-facts-and-invention\/\">violin<\/a><\/strong> solo is at once sweet and beautifully desolate, atop gentle <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/instruments\/woodwind-instruments\">woodwinds<\/a><\/strong>, strings and harp; there\u2019s a great warmth to the music, too. Undoubtedly some of the saddest classical music in the repertoire, the piece has taken on a life of its own in the 28 years since it was first heard on film and is a staple of the solo violin repertoire in concert and on recordings. <em>Michael Beek<\/em><\/p><p><strong>We named the Theme from <em>Schindler\u2019s List<\/em> one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/best-violin-music\/\">best pieces of violin music<\/a><\/strong><\/p><p><strong>In 1994 John William&#8217;s won an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/all-the-oscar-winners-and-nominees-for-best-original-score\/\">Best Original Score Oscar<\/a> for Schindler&#8217;s List<\/strong>. <strong>We also named John Williams one of the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/top-film-composers-ever\/\"> greatest film composers ever<\/a><\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Recommended recording: Schindler\u2019s List \u2013 Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (MCA)<\/strong><\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/dp\/B000002OR4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Buy from Amazon<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p><strong>Read our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/tag\/john-williams-reviews\/\">reviews of the latest John Williams recordings here<\/a><\/strong> <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>More of the saddest classical music<\/strong> <\/h2><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dido-s-lament-from-henry-purcell-s-dido-and-aeneas\">&#8216;<strong>Dido\u2019s Lament<\/strong>&#8216; from <strong>Henry Purcell\u2019s <em>Dido and Aeneas<\/em><\/strong><\/h3><p>\u2018Death is now a welcome guest\u2019: this forlorn lyric ends the recitative before Dido\u2019s final <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/what-aria\/\"><strong>aria<\/strong><\/a> in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/henry-purcell\/\">Purcell<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s opera, composed in the late 17th century. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/didos-lament-lyrics\/\">Dido&#8217;s lament<\/a><\/strong>, \u2018when I am laid in earth\u2019, lyrically and melodically epitomises the tragedy of her love affair with Aeneas, which results in her ending her own life and lighting a funeral pyre for Aeneas to see as he sails away.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Purcell - Dido &amp; Aeneas - When I am laid in earth (Dido's lament) Elin Manahan Thomas\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uGQq3HcOB0Y?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>The descending chromaticism of the aria mirrors Dido\u2019s descent towards death, driven to despair by Aeneas\u2019s abandonment of her. Perhaps that&#8217;s the power of the human voice.<\/p><p>Written as a response to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/charles-villiers-stanford\">Charles Villiers Stanford<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s <em>The Blue Bird<\/em>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/judith-bingham-2\">Judith Bingham<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s <em>The Drowned Lovers<\/em> uses the same chords as the Stanford song. This time, though, there is much more of a mournful, rippling soundworld, diving deep into the waters it describes as Stanford&#8217;s rises above. Of course, the subject matter of this piece \u2013 two lovers drowning \u2013 is tragic in itself, but Bingham heightens the intensity with her nuanced choral writing.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Judith Bingham - The Drowned Lovers\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xK4qFANWTvE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>It&#8217;s fairly unusual to hear a mezzo-soprano taking the solo line in a choral work, something that&#8217;s heard here and no doubt has an effect on the overall melancholy of the piece. The deep female voice carries the listener while the accompanying voices ebb and flow, creating the effect of waves lapping against the shore. The spell on Odette can only be broken if someone who has never fallen in love before swears undying love to her.<\/p><p>The <em>finale<\/em> of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/Tchaikovsky\">Tchaikovsky<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s stunning ballet shows Odette left heartbroken after her beloved Siegfried is tricked into choosing another bride. She then knows she must remain a swan forever.
