This comes after research revealed a shortage in the existing repertoire of pieces written for one-hand.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Liebestraum No. 3\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3uVmPhUi6Gk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>Designed to inspire people who play one-handed to be able to progress through a graded exam pathway, the new syllabus was developed in partnership with composers and consultants including Nicholas McCarthy, the first one-handed pianist to graduate from the Royal College of Music.<\/p><h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8216;We hope it will open up the world of piano playing for people with a range of upper limb differences and impairments&#8217;<\/h5><p>Ali Bowen-Davies, ABRSM Head of Assessment and Curriculum, explains: &#8216;These new repertoire lists for Performance Grades are a landmark in piano assessment, reflecting our belief that music learning and performance should be available to everyone.<\/p><p>&#8216;We hope it will open up the world of piano playing for people with a range of upper limb differences and impairments, as well as highlighting repertoire for any students who have temporarily lost the use of their arm or hand, providing a way for them to continue with their piano studies.&#8217;<\/p><p>Classical pianist and syllabus consultant Nicholas McCarthy adds: &#8216;I\u2019ve loved being the lead consultant on such an exciting project. I also hope it opens up musical opportunities and careers for a wider group of musicians. I know people are going to really enjoy getting to know the pieces in the syllabus and I can\u2019t wait to hear students perform them.&#8217;<\/p><p>Pieces featured include a Chopin prelude, Arlen &amp; Harburg\u2019s <em>Wizard of Oz<\/em> classic &#8216;Somewhere Over the Rainbow&#8217; and <em>Voice<\/em> <em>of Spring<\/em> by Venetian composer Sartorio.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/tv-and-film-music\/best-disney-songs\">These are the 15 greatest Disney songs of all time. However, composers have written one-handed piano pieces for decades. The most famous commissioner of one-handed repertoire was Paul Wittgenstein (1887 \u20131961) after he became a right-arm amputee during WW1.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/5-essential-works-left-hand-piano\">Five essential works for left hand piano<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>Famous piano works for one hand include <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/maurice-ravel\">Ravel<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand, composed for Wittgenstein between 1929 and 1930, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/johannes-brahms\">Brahms<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s piano transcription of the Chaconne from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/johann-sebastian-bach\">Bach<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-a-partita\">Partita<\/a><\/strong> in D minor. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/alexander-scriabin\">Scriabin<\/a><\/strong> composed his <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/prelude\">Prelude<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/nocturne-definition\">Nocturne<\/a><\/strong> Op. 9 for one hand, while <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/sergey-prokofiev\">Prokofiev<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s Piano Concerto No. 4 was another commission for Wittgenstein.\u00a0Lastly, the Capriccio by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/leos-janacek\">Jan\u00e1\u010dek<\/a><\/strong> is a rare example of a piece of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/chamber-music\">chamber music<\/a><\/strong> featuring a one-hand piano part &#8211; plus parts for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/instruments\/flute\"><strong>flute<\/strong><\/a>, two\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trumpethttps:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/instruments\/trumpet-valves-keys-mutes-how-to-play\"><strong>trumpets<\/strong><\/a>, three\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/instruments\/trombone\"><strong>trombones<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0tenor tuba (or euphonium).<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Yuja Wang - Ravel Left Hand Piano Concerto\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZbEtk1kdYx4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p\/> <\/body><\/html>\n<hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Published: Thursday, 03 October 2024 at 14:23 PM The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) has announced that it has developed the first ever exam repertoire lists for pianists playing with one hand, making exams more accessible for musicians with upper limb differences or impairments.
