His best music has a captivating grandeur and eloquence of expression, combined with the kind of intricate counterpoint you can also hear in his contemporaries Bach and Vivaldi.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/top-10-baroque-composers\">Top ten Baroque composers<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Best of Handel: six key works<\/h2><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dixit-dominus\"><em><strong>Dixit Dominus<\/strong><\/em> <strong>(1707)<\/strong><\/h3><p>Written during his years in Italy, the influence of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/topic\/antonio-vivaldi\"><strong>Vivaldi<\/strong><\/a> on this anthem is clear. A virtuosic choral piece with exuberant counterpoint and drive, <em>Dixit Dominus<\/em> is one of Handel&#8217;s most dramatic and vibrant choral works. Well deserved, too, as Handel&#8217;s opera boasts magnificently memorable music.<\/p><p><em>Giulio Cesare in Egitto<\/em> (<em>Julius Caesar in Egypt<\/em>) to give it its full name, the work is a three-act <em>opera seria<\/em> based on historical events involving Julius Caesar and Cleopatra. It&#8217;s rightly celebrated for its great dramatic power, memorable arias, and rich orchestration. He was, after all, an Anglicised German much like the Georges themselves, so it made a lot of sense.<\/p><p>Handel wrote four anthems for the coronation. Of these, easily the best known is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/when-was-handels-coronation-anthem-zadok-the-priest-first-performed\"><em>Zadok the Priest<\/em><\/a><\/strong>. Taking its name from a priest mentioned in the Old Testament, &#8216;Zadok&#8217; was performed at the moment George was anointed as the new king. Indeed, it has been performed at every single British coronation since then, right up until that of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/prince-charles-coronation-music\">Charles III<\/a><\/strong> in 2023. <\/p><p><strong>Recommended recording: <\/strong>Trevor Pinnock (organ); Westimister Abbey Choir and Orchestra\/Simon Preston<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em><strong>Messiah<\/strong><\/em> <strong>(1741)<\/strong><\/h3><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/handel-messiah\"><strong>Handel<\/strong><\/a> wrote his great oratorio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/hallelujah-story-handel-s-messiah\/\"><strong><em>Messiah<\/em><\/strong><\/a> in just two weeks in 1741, setting a libretto by Charles Jennens.
