Each divided into three movements, these four <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/what-concerto\/\"><strong>concertos<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>portray the drama (or peace) and scenes of spring, summer, autumn and winter in a pastoral setting. To help set these scenes, sonnets (possibly composed by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/antonio-vivaldi\/\">Vivaldi<\/a><\/strong> himself) serve as a preface for each concerto, introducing and reflecting the music that unfolds.<\/p><p>We named the Vivaldi<em> Four Seasons <\/em>as one of the<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/best-violin-concertos\">best pieces of violin music ever<\/a><\/strong>, as well as one of<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/the-greatest-violin-concertos-of-all-time\/\">the greatest violin concertos of all time<\/a> <\/strong>(in this case, a set of four violin concertos, but you get the point). <\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/five-unusual-interpretations-vivaldis-four-seasons\/\">Five unusual interpretations of Vivaldi\u2019s <em>The Four Seasons<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/six-best-vivaldi-works\/\">Vivaldi: Six of his best works<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>All four concertos are widely familiar today and regularly appear in popular culture, from films and TV to choreographed sport such as ice skating. Unsurprisingly, there is no shortage of recordings. Over the next decade, she would work her way to the top of the orchestra, reaching principal soloist and director by 1974. Though she left the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/what-instruments-make-up-an-orchestra\/\"><strong>orchestra<\/strong><\/a> in 1980, just a year after this recording was released, she continued collaborating with them. Her <em>Four Seasons<\/em> is arguably her finest achievement on disc.<\/p><p>Often thought of as the first definitive recording of Vivaldi\u2019s <em>The Four Seasons<\/em>, Iona Brown and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields display an exceptional lightness of touch throughout that makes the performance compelling yet easy to listen to. Despite its size, the chamber ensemble achieves a rich, weighty sound that converses beautifully with Podger\u2019s light, airy solo lines. This recording is evocative and colourful, embodying Vivaldi\u2019s music on its own terms.<\/p><ul><li><strong>Rachel Podger won Recording of the Year at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/awards\/2023-awards\/bbc-music-awards-2023-winners-announced\">2023 BBC Music Magazine Awards<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>\u2018Part of the freshness stems from the interaction between Podger and her one-to-a-part ensemble. Released in 1989, Kennedy\u2019s recording of Vivaldi\u2019s <em>The Four Seasons<\/em> spent nearly two years at the top of the UK classical album chart and sold over 2 million copies, making it the best-selling classical recording at the time.<\/p><p>We named Nigel Kennedy one of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/four-best-rule-breaking-musicians\/\">best rule-breaking musicians<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p><p>Essential listening for all Vivaldi enthusiasts, few recordings display the same level of vivacity as this collaboration between Kennedy and the English Chamber Orchestra \u2013 the matchless energy of their full-throttle performance doesn\u2019t mean lack of precision, however. The result is fresh and exciting but crucially still recognisable as Vivaldi\u2019s work. <\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/dp\/B00IAD18J6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Buy from Amazon<\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/music.apple.com\/gb\/album\/1440744386\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Stream on Apple Music<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Violin for All Seasons<\/strong><\/h3><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tasmin Little (violin), Graham Bradshaw (Tibetan singing bowl), David Wright (harpsichord), BBC Symphony Orchestra <em>Chandos CHSA5175<\/em> (2016)<\/strong><\/h4><p>Violinist <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/tasmin-little-interview\">Tasmin Little<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s vibrant recording of the Vivaldi<em> Four Seasons<\/em> is accompanied on disc by British composer <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/panufnik-roxanna\">Roxanna Panufnik<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s <em>Four World Seasons, <\/em>a piece written specially for her. Panufnik transports listeners through space as well as time in a work that is divided into four movements: \u2018Autumn in Albania\u2019, \u2018Tibetan Winter\u2019, \u2018Spring in Japan\u2019 and \u2018Indian Summer\u2019, and includes the use of a Tibetan singing bowl. <\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/dp\/B01KZL855K\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Buy from Amazon<\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/music.apple.com\/gb\/album\/1759726756\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Stream on Apple Music<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Vanessa-Mae: Storm<\/strong><\/h3><p>For her 1997 album Storm, British violinist Vanessa-Mae delivered us a techno-fuelled interpretation on the Presto movement from the Four Seasons&#8217;s <em>Summer<\/em>. \u00a0Distorted guitars and driving beats &#8211; this was Vivaldi in a whole different soundworld, and (spoiler alert) won&#8217;t be to everyone&#8217;s taste.
