Though many have yet to be performed, a number of them \u2013 particularly the earlier ones and a clutch in the late 200s \u2013 have been recorded for the BIS label, not least his hypnotic and eerily unsettling No. 16 \u2018Thoughts at the Border\u2019 in 1990. On top of these, he also found time to compose shorter orchestral works, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-concerto\">concertos<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/chamber-music\">chamber music<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Leif Segerstam Symphony N\u00b0 16 &quot;Thoughts at the Border (1990)\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ovmrUimUcdI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>To concentrate solely on Segerstam\u2019s record-breaking symphonic writing, however, would come at the expense of a proper appreciation of his achievements as a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/what-does-a-conductor-do\">conductor<\/a><\/strong>. Initially trained as a violinist and pianist, he went on to study at both the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and the Juilliard School in New York, making his debut in 1963. Early positions included that of conductor of Stockholm\u2019s Royal Opera before, in 1995, Leif Segerstam was appointed chief conductor of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, a post in which he enjoyed great success for 12 years, subsequently being named as chief conductor emeritus.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/worlds-best-orchestras\">The world&#8217;s best orchestras &#8211; and their finest recordings<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Acclaimed Sibelius&#8230; and more<\/h2><p>It was with the Helsinki Philharmonic that Segerstam made some of his most distinguished recordings. These included the complete symphonies of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/jean-sibelius\">Sibelius<\/a><\/strong> plus, in 2006, the same composer\u2019s <em>Luonnotar<\/em> and Orchestral Songs which, featuring the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-soprano\">soprano<\/a><\/strong> Soile Isokoski, went on to win the following year\u2019s BBC Music Magazine Disc of the Year. <\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/sibelius-a-life-in-10-masterpieces\"><strong>Sibelius: a life in ten masterpieces<\/strong><\/a><\/li><\/ul><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Jean Sibelius: Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 43 | Turku Philharmonic Orchestra\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gMOV4Dbixd8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/johannes-brahms\">Brahms<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/einojuhani-rautavaara\">Rautavaara<\/a><\/strong> were among the other composers whom Segerstam recorded with distinction, while 1997\u2019s <em>Earquake<\/em>, comprised of works specifically selected for pushing an orchestra\u2019s volume button to the max, neatly encapsulated his no-holds-barred character on the podium.<\/p><p>Segerstam also held prestigious posts at Savonlinna Opera and the Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, was in great demand as a guest conductor and, as a professor at the Sibelius Academy, counted fellow Finnish conductor Susanna M\u00e4lkki among his many distinguished students.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/best-finnish-conductors\">Five of the best Finnish conductors<\/a><\/strong> <\/li><\/ul> <\/body><\/html>\n<hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Published: Thursday, 10 October 2024 at 18:12 PM Conductor and composer Leif Segerstam, one of classical music\u2019s most colourful yet supremely talented personalities, has died at the age of 80.
