And indeed, why memorise?<\/p> <p>Some performers like to memorise works, others will need the music right there in front of them. Of course, the decision of whether or not to try and memorise a work before performance depends on two factors: the preferences of he performer, and the nature of the work itself. We asked three performers to nominate the work that they&#8217;ve found hardest to commit to memory.<\/p> <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hardest music to memorise<\/h2> <p>Here are nominations for the hardest classical music to memorise, from pianist Ll\u0177r Williams, mezzo-soprano Jennifer Johnston and violinist Chlo\u00eb Hanslip.<\/p> <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-llyr-williams-pianist\">Ll\u0177r Williams <em>Pianist<\/em><\/h3> <p>Beethoven: Piano Sonata No. 31<\/p> <p>When I play <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/ludwig-van-beethoven\">Beethoven<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s Sonata No. 31, Op. 110, I have part of the score hidden inside the piano. The first <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-fugue\">fugue<\/a><\/strong> in the last movement is particularly hard to remember. Whereas the fugue in, say, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/recordings\/best-recordings-beethovens-hammerklavier-sonata\"><em>Hammerklavier <\/em>Sonata<\/a><\/strong> is more athletic and muscular and goes into the muscular memory fairly easily, in Op. 110, the writing is more mellifluous.<\/p> <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/recordings\/five-best-recordings-beethovens-sonata-cycles\">Beethoven piano sonatas: the best recordings<\/a><\/strong><\/li> <li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/easy-piano-songs\">Easiest piano songs: the best tunes for beginners to learn<\/a><\/strong><\/li> <\/ul> <figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"> <div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"> <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Piano Sonata No. 31 in A-Flat Major, Op. 110: I. It might also be psychological, as shortly before I was once due to play it, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/news\/mitsuko-uchida-awarded-rps-gold-medal\">Mitsuko Uchida<\/a><\/strong> told me how she had gone all to pot in the fugue in a concert \u2013 I then found myself doing likewise.<\/p> <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More hardest classical music to memorise<\/h2> <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jennifer Johnston <em>Mezzo-soprano<\/em><\/h3> <p>Puccini: <em>Gianni Schicchi<\/em><\/p> <p>All <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/richard-wagner\">Wagner<\/a><\/strong> roles can be difficult to learn, partly because the German isn\u2019t completely modern and so the syntax is different to how you would speak German today, but also because you never repeat anything.
