We asked Harry Christophers, conductor of the much-loved British choir <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/the-sixteen\">The Sixteen<\/a><\/strong>, to share his five favourite old carols, below. The lyrics, meanwhile, are believed to date from earlier in the 16th century.<\/p> <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/best-german-composers\">The best German composers of all time<\/a><\/strong><\/li> <\/ul> <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. <em>Make we joy now in this fest<\/em> (Seldon manuscript, c. 1450)<\/strong><\/h3> <p>The original meaning of carol was \u2018round dance\u2019, and from here evolves the carol as it emerged during <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/medieval-music-guide\">Medieval<\/a> <\/strong>times. It consists of a burden (chorus) which alternates with verses sung by one or more solo voices. There is no better example of that dance structure than here.<\/p> <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/best-medieval-composers\">The best Medieval composers<\/a><\/strong><\/li> <\/ul> <p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tvma56tbIZM?rel=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"430\" frameborder=\"0\"\/><\/p> <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Richard Pygott: <em>Quid petis, o fili?<\/em><\/strong><\/h3> <p>Pygott\u2019s macaronic (mixed-language) poem with its mixture of the sacred and the profane takes the listener back to Medieval forms, yet his clever use of imitative <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/polyphony-music-definition\">polyphony<\/a><\/strong> turns a delightful text into quite exquisite music.<\/p> <p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/meRV4LR85vo?rel=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"430\" frameborder=\"0\"\/><\/p> <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/article\/best-classical-music-winter\"><strong>The best classical music for winter<\/strong><\/a><\/li> <\/ul> <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Jean Mouton: <\/strong><strong><em>Nesciens mater<\/em><\/strong><\/h3> <p>Here, the great French Renaissance composer Jean Mouton gives us so much more than a technical feat (a quadruple canon over a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/plainchant\">plainchant<\/a><\/strong> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-a-melody\">melody<\/a><\/strong>). This is without doubt one of the finest Renaissance motets for the Christmas season \u2013 slow-moving <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-harmony-in-music\">harmonies<\/a><\/strong>, subtly controlled, yet rich in ideas.<\/p> <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/best-french-composers-ever\">The greatest French composers<\/a><\/strong><\/li> <\/ul> <p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_hZHKKD5ahk?rel=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"430\" frameborder=\"0\"\/><\/p> <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/article\/best-classical-music-night\"><strong>The best classical music for the night<\/strong><\/a><\/li> <\/ul> <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. Its unique sound, both joyful and ethereal, has made it one of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/christmas-carols\">best loved Christmas carols of all time<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p> <p>Here are the lyrics to <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/in-dulci-jubilo-lyrics\">In Dulci Jubilo<\/a><\/strong><\/em>.<\/p> <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. <em><strong>Gaudete <\/strong><\/em><\/h3> <p>A sacred song from the 16th century, written in Latin. Its medieval melody is both uplifting and mysterious.
