But the instrument on which they play here is a Chris Maene straight-strung concert grand, which allows for a particularly crystalline sound. And they are currently half way through a recording project on it of all Beethoven\u2019s symphonies in his student Carl Czerny\u2019s four-hand arrangement. That same Czerny also makes an appearance on this album.<\/p> <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/who-invented-the-piano\">Who invented the piano?<\/a><\/li> <li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/instruments\/four-hand-piano-when-did-the-fashion-for-piano-four-hands-start\">Four-hand piano&#8230; how the fashion for four-hand piano started<\/a><\/li> <\/ul> <p>Duo Pleyel\u2019s Yuletide offering is the latest in a long tradition of convivial Christmas music, but their programme is unusually\u00a0<em>recherch\u00e9<\/em>. It begins with three sections of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/franz-liszt\">Liszt<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0<em>Christmas Tree Suite<\/em>, each of which has an artless simplicity which goes straight to the heart. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/czerny-carl\">Czerny<\/a>\u2019s arrangements of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/george-frideric-handel\">Handel<\/a>\u2019s \u2018Unto us a child is born\u2019 and \u2018Halleluja\u2019 exude a ringingly celebratory atmosphere, which transports us back to when George II felt impelled to stand up in honour of its premiere in 1743.<\/p> <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/best-christmas-music\">Best Christmas classical music<\/a><\/li> <li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/best-christmas-piano-music\">Best Christmas piano music<\/a><\/li> <li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/recordings\/best-recordings-handel-s-messiah\">Best recordings of Handel&#8217;s <em>Messiah<\/em><\/a><\/li> <\/ul> <p>Duo Pleyel admit that they added some \u2018tinsel and Gl\u00fchwein\u2019 to Strauss II\u2019s encomium to the Danube, and also to Strauss the elder\u2019s\u00a0<em>Radetsky-Marsch<\/em>: it\u2019s amazing what a few trills and tremolos can do. But the\u00a0<em>pi\u00e8ce de r\u00e9sistance<\/em>\u00a0is their arrangement of Eduard Langer\u2019s take on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/tchaikovsky\">Tchaikovsky<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/the-nutcracker\">Nutcracker<\/a> Suite<\/em>\u00a0which was made at the same time as the ballet score\u2019s first appearance. Every one of the little musical vignettes is delectable, and it\u2019s nice to learn from the internet that a\u00a0<em>mirliton<\/em>\u00a0is a West-Indian fruit, as well as being one of the seductive figures which swirl through Tchaikovsky\u2019s penultimate dance.
