He was well known for his operas, of which\u00a0<em>Jakob Lenz<\/em>\u00a0(1979) was an early and notable example.\u00a0<\/p> <p>The subject is the eponymous Baltic German\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/sturm-und-drang-movement-what-was-it-and-when-did-it-take-place\">Sturm und Drang<\/a><\/em>\u00a0poet and playwright (1751-92), an episode from whose sad life (he seems to have suffered from schizophrenia and eventually died homeless on a Moscow street) was turned into a novella by the early Romantic writer Georg B\u00fcchner. It\u2019s his text which forms the basis of Michael Fr\u00f6hling\u2019s libretto.<\/p> <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/what-language-is-opera\">What language is opera sung in?<\/a><\/li> <\/ul> <p>Lenz\u2019s unrequited love for Friederike Brion, a former flame of his sometime friend Goethe, runs like a leitmotif through the score.<\/p> <p>The forces are small: three principal singers \u2013 the tormented Lenz (a tour de force by baritone Joachim Goltz), Pastor Oberlin (bass Patrick Zielke) and Lenz\u2019s friend Kaufmann (tenor Raphael Wittner), both of whom who try to help him; plus a group of six adult offstage voices and a handful of children\u2019s voices.<\/p> <p>In addition, there\u2019s an instrumental ensemble of 11 players \u2013 here members of the Nationaltheater-Orchester Mannheim under the skilful baton of Franck Ollu.
