The cathedral city of Lincoln, for example, had a group of watches, or Waits, until around 1850.<\/strong><\/p> <p>In his short story <em>The Seven Poor Travellers<\/em> (1854), Charles Dickens describes a group of musicians performing in a town one winter\u2019s evening: \u2018As I passed along the High Street, I heard the Waits at a distance, and struck off to find them. They were playing near one of the old gates of the City, at the corner of a wonderfully quaint row of red-brick tenements.\u2019<\/p> <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong><a class=\"standard-card-new__article-title\" href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/brief-history-christmas-music\/\">How did Christmas music start?<\/a><\/strong><\/li> <li><strong><a class=\"standard-card-new__article-title\" href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/when-was-the-first-christmas-carol\/\">When was the first Christmas carol?<\/a><\/strong><\/li> <\/ul> <p>However, carol singing really came into its own in Victorian times, with the advent of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/very-victorian-christmas\/\">Victorian Christmas<\/a><\/strong>. This was when Christmas became a holiday that families could enjoy, and celebrate, and music in the home was a big part of these celebrations. It was organised by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/musicblog\/2013\/nov\/29\/truro-nine-lessons-carols-christmas-history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Edward White Benson<\/a><\/strong>, the First Bishop of Truro, who later became the Archbishop of Canterbury.<\/p> <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/old-christmas-carols\">Five of the best ancient Christmas carols<\/a><\/strong><\/li> <\/ul> <p>A separate tradition of \u2018<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/what-iswassailing\/\">wassailing<\/a><\/strong>\u2019 also existed as far back as Anglo-Saxon times. The word \u2018wassail\u2019 probably comes from the Old Norse \u2018ves heill\u2019 meaning \u2018be well and in good health\u2019, and was a toast. But by the Victorian period, &#8216;wassailers&#8217; were carolling groups who went round the town and would be rewarded with a hot, spiced (often cider-based) drink, known as \u2018wassail\u2019.<\/p> <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/christmas-carol-hymn\">What\u2019s the difference between a Christmas carol and a hymn?<\/a><\/strong><\/li> <\/ul> <p>Today, carol singers can more usually be found in town squares, shopping centres and visiting hospitals and old people\u2019s homes \u2013 and rather than waiting to be rewarded with a cup of wassail, modern carollers are more likely to ask for donations to charity.
