Hans Zimmer<\/a><\/strong> is one of the most celebrated and influential, not to say the greatest movie composers<\/a><\/strong> of our time. Known for his innovative soundscapes and groundbreaking use of technology, Zimmer has composed scores for over 150 films, earning numerous awards, including Golden Globes, Grammy Awards and a brace of Oscars along the way. Here’s our ranking of the best Hans Zimmer film scores.<\/p>

Beyond Rangoon<\/strong> (1995)<\/h3> John Boorman\u2019s critically-acclaimed drama about a woman on a journey of self-discovery in Burma (Myanmar) may not be the first title you think of in relation to Hans Zimmer. His contribution to the film, though, remains one of his most understated and beautiful. With percussion<\/a><\/strong>, ethnic flutes<\/a><\/strong> and vocals at its heart, Zimmer\u2019s score is a bit of a gem, surrounded as it is in his filmography by animated features, romantic comedies and high-octane blockbusters.<\/p>

<\/div> <\/figure> <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>10. Crimson Tide<\/strong> (1995)<\/h3> <p>Zimmer truly pushed the envelope with this score, for Tony Scott\u2019s submarine thriller. His familiar themes from those first two films are plundered and given even more gravitas, along with some stunning action setpieces and new thematic material. Hans Zimmer might have been unsure about taking on a \u2018kids film\u2019 at the time, but his music brought to <em>The Lion King<\/em> a gravitas and emotion that truly elevates it. It\u2019s essentially a tragedy, after all, and the composer takes the score to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/what-was-the-first-opera-ever-written\">operatic<\/a><\/strong> heights.<\/p> <p>Hans Zimmer deservedly won an Oscar for his score for <em>The Lion King<\/em>. A key component is the traditional African vocal elements, brought to life by South African musician Lebo M \u2013 with whom Zimmer worked on 1992\u2019s <em>The Power of One<\/em>. While the late Heath Ledger\u2019s performance as the Joker was scene-stealing (and Oscar-winning), Zimmer\u2019s contribution picked up on the character\u2019s freneticism and murky sense of show. As with<em>The Dark Knight<\/em> above, sound design and music converge, creating an aural world that goes beyond any sense of traditional film scoring. Zimmer made the most of the no-holds-barred battle sequences, unleashing his own variety of hell with massive musical strokes. Dune<\/strong> <strong>\/ Dune: Part Two<\/strong> (2021 \/ 2024)<\/h3> <p>To evoke the literally otherworldly atmospheres of Frank Herbert’s exotic, interstellar <em>Dune<\/em> universe, Zimmer arrived at a captivating mixture of traditional orchestration and more experimental sounds.<\/p> <p>He called on an array of unusual instruments, custom-made sounds, and unique vocal textures, including chanting and wailing voices, to evoke the mystique of Arrakis, the desert home planet of the hero Paul Atreides. Elsewhere, surprising elements like an ensemble of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/instruments\/bassoon\">bassoons<\/a><\/strong> contributed to the haunting atmospheres of Arrakis and Caladan.
