Some of his lesser-known works, however, remain underappreciated despite their brilliance. Here are a carefully selected 11 of Beethoven&#8217;s overlooked gems:<\/strong><\/p> <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Little known Beethoven<\/h2> <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-wellington-s-victory-the-battle-symphony-op-91\"><strong>1. Wellington\u2019s Victory\/The Battle Symphony, Op. 91<\/strong><\/h3> <p>This 15-minute orchestral piece was composed in 1813 to celebrate the defeat of Joseph Bonaparte, king of Spain and brother of Napoleon, by British troops led by the Duke of Wellington at the Battle of Vitoria.<\/p> <p>Beethoven&#8217;s music dramatises the battle, splitting the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/what-instruments-make-up-an-orchestra\">orchestra<\/a><\/strong> into two and incorporating live cannon and musket fire for added excitement. Well-known national tunes represent the two sides with <em>God Save the King<\/em> and <em>Rule Britannia<\/em> for the British and <em>Marlbrough s&#8217;en va-t-en guerre <\/em>for the French.<\/p> <p>Today the piece is often seen as a novelty, but at the time of his death it was publicly considered one of his best works.<\/p> <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/article\/best-recordings-beethovens-symphony-no-7\"><strong>The best recordings of Beethoven&#8217;s Seventh Symphony<\/strong><\/a><\/li> <\/ul> <figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"> <div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"> <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Beethoven Welilngton's Victory Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra Herbert von Karajan\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/R_ibES7i-HU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/> <\/div> <\/figure> <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-12-german-dances-woo-8\"><strong>2. 12 German Dances, WoO 8<\/strong><\/h3> <p>Beethoven wrote these 12 German Dances in 1795, at the age of just 25, for the Redoutensaal, a salon frequented by the Viennese upper classes. This is Beethoven on a small scale, displaying concise craftsmanship \u2013 not one of the dances breaks the two-minute mark.<\/p> <p>Though Beethoven originally orchestrated the dances, they became popular enough for him to make a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/who-invented-the-piano\">piano<\/a><\/strong> arrangement to be played at home.<\/p> <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/beethoven-fifth-symphony\"><strong>A guide to Beethoven&#8217;s Symphony No. 5<\/strong><\/a><\/li> <li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/recordings\/best-recordings-beethovens-hammerklavier-sonata\"><strong>The best recordings of Beethoven&#8217;s Hammerklavier Sonata<\/strong><\/a><\/li> <\/ul> <figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"> <div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"> <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Beethoven - 12 GERMAN DANCES - WOO 13\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/N0nU0NPS-7c?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/> <\/div> <\/figure> <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-british-folk-song-arrangements\"><strong>3. British folk song arrangements<\/strong><\/h3> <p>Beethoven\u2019s 179 settings of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/best-folk-songs\">folk songs<\/a><\/strong> earned him a substantial amount of money. He was commissioned by publisher and folk-song collector George Thomson, who paid the composer four ducats per song \u2013 twice as much as his erstwhile teacher <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/joseph-haydn\">Haydn<\/a><\/strong> initially received. Thomson had transcribed many of the melodies on his travels around Great Britain and he also commissioned great British poets like Robert Burns and Walter Scott to write new texts for existing folk songs.<\/p> <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/english-folk-songs\">English folk songs: ten of the best<\/a><\/strong><\/li> <\/ul> <p>A mixture of simple solo, duet, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-trio\">trio<\/a><\/strong> arrangements, the songs were suitable for social use in the houses and salons of the Viennese middle-class. The songs range from the jolly <em>(Put round the bright wine)<\/em> to melancholy <em>(On the Massacre of Glencoe)<\/em>. Cantata On the Death of Emperor Joseph II, WoO 87<\/strong><\/h3> <p>In 1790, when news of the death of the Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II reached Beethoven&#8217;s native Bonn, the University began preparations for a memorial ceremony that would take place just a month later. Theology student Severin Anton Averdonk wrote a text, and an open invitation was extended to composers in Bonn to set it to music.<\/p> <p>The 19-year-old Beethoven leapt at the chance to prove his talent as a composer. Established composers were reluctant to attempt the work on such a tight deadline, so Beethoven won the job with this <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-a-cantata\">cantata<\/a><\/strong>. Three Equale for Four Trombones, WoO 30<\/strong><\/h3> <p>Beethoven wrote this set of &#8216;equale&#8217; works for All Soul\u2019s Day in Linz Cathedral, 1812. They were later performed at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/beethoven-funeral\">Beethoven&#8217;s own funeral<\/a><\/strong> in an arrangement for male voice choir, with the words of the Miserere added by Ignaz von Seyfried.<\/p> <p>&#8216;Equale&#8217; or &#8216;Aequale&#8217; is a Latin musical term that means &#8216;for equal parts,&#8217; or put simply, for the same instrument. Beethoven writes for his four <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/instruments\/trombone\">trombones<\/a><\/strong> in long, homophonic phrases, creating a rich sombre tone throughout the set.<\/p> <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"\/> <figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"> <div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"> <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Beethoven - Drei Equali performed by Southeast Trombone Symposium faculty\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eJMazTQcGXU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/> <\/div> <\/figure> <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More little known Beethoven<\/h2> <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-italian-songs\"><strong>6. Italian songs<\/strong><\/h3> <p>Beethoven wrote a great number of Italian songs while studying composition with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/salieri-7\">Antonio Salieri<\/a><\/strong> (perhaps best known as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/mozart\">Mozart<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s rival-cum-associate and the anti-hero of the film <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/amadeus-film\">Amadeus<\/a><\/strong><\/em>), often as exercises. Very few of his early works have survived, but those he composed or revisited in later life are far better preserved.<\/p> <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/best-italian-composers-of-all-time\">The greatest Italian composers of all time<\/a><\/strong><\/li> <li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/10-mozart-myths\">Ten Mozart myths debunked<\/a><\/strong><\/li> <\/ul> <p>The songs have a very different mood from Beethoven&#8217;s famous song-cycle <em>An die ferne geliebte<\/em>. Some of the songs, the brief, lyrical <em>Ecco quel fiero istante<\/em> (WoO 124) for example, could almost be by Mozart.<\/p> <p><em>In questa tomba oscura<\/em> (WoO 133) is entirely different. Here we can see more dramatic elements and the accompaniment contributes to the development of the song as it transitions from calm, slow chords to thunderous quaver-movement and back again.<\/p> <figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"> <div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"> <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Beethoven \/ Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau: In questa tomba obscura, WoO 133\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yiV3ex3igjM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/> <\/div> <\/figure> <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>7. Organ Fugue, WoO 31<\/strong><\/h3> <p>The only solo piece Beethoven wrote for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/instruments\/when-was-the-organ-invented\">organ<\/a><\/strong>, this is also one of the earliest works he composed. The piece ends with some interest, demonstrating a busy recapitulation of the main theme over a sustained pedal note, but otherwise reveals little that hints towards his revolutionary mature style. It is thought that the piece was written as part of the examination requirements for an organ position at the court of Bonn.<\/p> <p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"430\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xbQJxU0TxQU\" width=\"560\"\/><\/p> <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>8. Sonata for flute and piano in B flat major, Anh. 4<\/strong><\/h3> <p>Beethoven wrote his sonata for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/instruments\/flute\">flute<\/a><\/strong> and piano when he was in his early twenties but it wasn\u2019t published until 1906, when a selection of the composer&#8217;s works were released posthumously. He replaces the conventionally slow second movement with a lively Polonaise, while a playful theme and variations play out between the flute and piano in the final movement.<\/p> <figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"> <div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"> <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Flute Sonata in B-Flat Major, Anh. 4: I. Allegro\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/j7PGCqzRv0M?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/> <\/div> <\/figure> <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>9. Three duets for clarinet and bassoon, WoO 27<\/strong><\/h3> <p>This set of three charming duets emerged in Paris towards the beginning of the 19th century and are a delightful addition to a relatively limited repertoire for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/instruments\/history-of-the-clarinet-its-invention-evolution-and-famous-clarinet-makers\">clarinet<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/instruments\/bassoon\">bassoon<\/a><\/strong> duo. While there is some debate among musicologists over the origins of the pieces, it is widely accepted that Beethoven composed them some time in the 1790s, while his compositional style was still developing.<\/p> <p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"315\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0gcTpVPxcyI\" width=\"560\"\/><\/p> <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>10. Sextet for two horns and string quartet in E flat major, Op. 81b<\/strong><\/h3> <p>Written around 1795, the progress of Beethoven\u2019s compositional development is evident in the way he treats the two horns in this piece. The composer acknowledges the typical use of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/the-history-of-the-french-horn\">horn<\/a><\/strong> for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/fanfare-meaning\">fanfares<\/a><\/strong> and hunting calls, but also shows the lyrical qualities the instrument has to offer in the duet between both horns in the second movement, which has a very minimal <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/instruments\/string-instruments\">string<\/a><\/strong> accompaniment.<\/p> <p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"430\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Jo44MaMRBEE\" width=\"560\"\/><\/p> <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">And finally&#8230; a little known Beethoven piano gem<\/h2> <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>10. <em>Andante favori<\/em> in F major, WoO 57<\/strong><\/h3> <p>This beautiful piece for solo piano was published in 1805. Originally intended to be the second movement of the \u2018Waldstein\u2019 piano sonata, Beethoven omitted it on the advice of friends who felt it was too long.
