Sold in many of the coffee houses that were flourishing in the capital, hot chocolate was heady, delicious stuff, often brewed with ingredients like cinammon or citrus peel. But it wasn&#8217;t all a tale of sweetness and light. One (admittedly unlikely) theory about the 36-year-old <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/henry-purcell\">Henry Purcell<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s untimely death in 1695 suggests that the British composer was poisoned by drinking chocolate.<\/p> <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/15-composers-who-loved-their-food\">15 composers who loved their food&#8230; from truffle-stuffed turkey to brown sugar sandwiches<\/a><\/strong><\/li> <\/ul> <h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More sweet-toothed composers&#8230;<\/h4> <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Igor Stravinsky&#8230; royal jelly honey for all-round good health<\/h3> <p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/igor-stravinsky\">Igor Stravinsky<\/a><\/strong> liked honey so much that he reportedly travelled with his own jar of it. Unlike Bizet, he wasn&#8217;t a fiend for all things sugary. The Russian composer subscribed to the idea that royal jelly honey \u2013 the honey for the queen bee \u2013 had health-giving properties, and would stir it into his tea. One evening, in Hollywood, Stravinsky went to answer the front door to find the composer whom he described as a a &#8216;six-and-a-half-foot scowl&#8217;. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/sergey-rachmaninov\">Rachmaninov<\/a><\/strong>, a fellow emigr\u00e9, was there bearing a gift: a jar of natural honey.<\/p> <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/conductor-types\">These are the 15 conductor types. Which of these have you spotted?<\/a><\/strong><\/li> <\/ul> <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Giuseppe Verdi&#8230; fruits in candied syrup<\/h3> <p>Violins aren&#8217;t the only speciality of Cremona. The Northern-Italian town is also famed for its &#8216;mostarda&#8217;, a delicacy that was a particular favourite of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/giuseppe-verdi\">Giuseppe Verdi<\/a><\/strong>. Whole fruits are candied in syrup, creating jewel-like colours and rich flavours. For composing <em>That Mighty Heart<\/em>, her contribution to the <em>NMC Songbook<\/em> CD \u2013 a celebratory project for the label&#8217;s 20th anniversary \u2013 Panufnik asked for chocolate reimbursement, preferably Hotel Chocolat or Lindt.
