They may have elegant transitions from one variation to the next, or composers may revel in the chains of distinctive musical pearls they make resound next to one another. Yet each set of variations has a connection underneath their vertiginous diversity, thanks to their shared transformation of a single idea. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p3&quot;\"><span class=\"&quot;s2&quot;\">That\u2019s especially obvious from the late 18th century onwards, when variations on themes began to proliferate. From <strong><a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/mozart\/&quot;\">Mozar<\/a><\/strong>t\u2019s on \u2018Ah! vous dirai-je, maman\u2019 \u2013 or \u2018Twinkle, twinkle little star\u2019 \u2013 to Rzewski\u2019s on \u2018The People United Will <\/span><span class=\"&quot;s3&quot;\">Never Be Defeated!\u2019, composers play with <\/span><span class=\"&quot;s2&quot;\">their tunes, stretching a rubber band of recognition for all of us listening, and showing off their seemingly boundless compositional creativity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p3&quot;\"><span class=\"&quot;s2&quot;\">So how, and why, does a set of variations end? Like the apparently limitless iterations of the human genome, composers could keep varying the same tune into a temporal infinity.
