In an upcoming adaptation by 20th Century Fox, West Side Story\u00a0<\/em>will represent Steven Spielberg\u2019s first musical project. \u2018This film is probably the most daunting of my career,\u2019 he says. \u2018West Side Story<\/em> is arguably the greatest score ever written in the theatre, and that\u2019s not lost on any of us.\u2019<\/p>\n

The plot was originally inspired by William Shakespeare\u2019s\u00a0Romeo and Juliet<\/em>, in which\u00a0lovers Maria and Tony find themselves entangled in a bitter battle between their gangster families.<\/p>\n

Leonard Bernstein<\/strong><\/a> and Steven Sondheim\u2019s original musical was first adapted for the big screen in 1961, just four years after it first hit Broadway. It\u2019s now receiving its long-anticipated second outing.<\/p>\n

After endless date changes, the official release date of the new\u00a0West Side Story\u00a0<\/em>film was announced at the 2021 Oscars, along with a new teaser trailer.<\/p>\n

Who is writing the score to the new\u00a0West Side Story\u00a0<\/em>adaptation?<\/h2>\nLeonard Bernstein<\/strong><\/a> wrote the score for the original\u00a01957 Broadway production, with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.<\/p>\n
The original West Side Story <\/em>score will be adapted for the new film by David Newman, who also wrote the scores to\u00a0Ice Age<\/em>,\u00a0Matilda<\/em> and\u00a0Anastasia<\/em>, the latter of which won him an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Score.<\/p>\n\n<p>David Newman comes from a composing family: he is the son of legendary film composer Alfred Newman, who won nine Academy Awards and was nominated 45 times. He is also the brother of film composer <a href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/how-are-composers-randy-and-thomas-newman-related\/"\"><strong>Thomas Newman<\/strong><\/a>, who has written the scores to 1917,\u00a0<em>Finding Nemo<\/em> and <em>The Shawshank Redemption<\/em>,\u00a0as well as several James Bond films.<\/p>\n<iframe title=\""Finding\" nemo=\"\" score-=\"\" egg=\"\" newman=\"\" width=\""200"\" height=\""113"\" src=\""https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uYuXG0C2tsk?feature=oembed"\" frameborder=\""0"\" allow=\""accelerometer;\" autoplay=\"\" clipboard-write=\"\" encrypted-media=\"\" gyroscope=\"\" picture-in-picture=\"\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/>\n<p>David is also the cousin of\u00a0<strong><a href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/how-are-composers-randy-and-thomas-newman-related\/"\">Randy Newman<\/a><\/strong>, who has scored many Disney-Pixar films including\u00a0<em>Monsters, Inc.<\/em>\u00a0and<em>\u00a0Toy Story<\/em>.\u00a0He was up against Thomas in the 2019 Academy Awards, for which Thomas was nominated for\u00a01917\u00a0and Randy for\u00a0<em>Marriage Story<\/em>.<\/p>\n<iframe title=\""01.\" main=\"\" theme=\"\" monsters=\"\" inc=\"\" ost=\"\" width=\""200"\" height=\""150"\" src=\""https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_WRKbu5j0O0?feature=oembed"\" frameborder=\""0"\" allow=\""accelerometer;\" autoplay=\"\" clipboard-write=\"\" encrypted-media=\"\" gyroscope=\"\" picture-in-picture=\"\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/>\n<ul><li><a href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/how-are-composers-randy-and-thomas-newman-related\/"\"><strong>A guide to the Newman family<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\""http:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/news\/nominees-announced-best-original-score-year-s-oscars"\">Introducing the nominees for Best Original Score at the 2019 Oscars<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul><h2>Who has been cast in <em>West Side Story\u00a0<\/em>so far?<\/h2>\n<p>The casting of\u00a0<em>West Side Story\u00a0<\/em>involved the biggest casting search Steven Spielberg has ever undertaken, with the exception of\u00a0<em>Schindler\u2019s List.\u00a0<\/em>It marks the film debuts of over 50 young performers.<\/p>\n<p>Spielberg has cast 18-year-old singer-songwriter Rachel Zegler as Maria, who will be making her film debut. The high school student responded to the production\u2019s open casting call \u2013 which called solely for Latinx actors \u2013 with a video of herself singing \u2018Tonight\u2019 and \u2018Me Siento Hermosa\u2019 (\u2018I Feel Pretty\u2019). \u2018I am so thrilled to be playing the iconic role of Maria alongside this amazing cast,\u2019 exclaimed Zegler. \u2018As a Colombian-American woman growing up in this day and age, strong roles like Maria are so important. To be able to bring that role to life \u2014 a role that means so much to the Hispanic community \u2014 is so humbling.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I felt my mandate was pretty clear, that all of the Sharks, Mari\u0301a, Anita, Bernardo and Chino \u2013 everyone needed to be Latinx,\u2019 says casting director Cindy Tolan. \u2018And they also had to be triple threats, meaning they needed to be able to sing, dance and act. A quadruple threat, really, because there was a fourth dimension: the camera had to love them.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Ansel Elgort, previously seen in Edgar Wright\u2019s 2017 film\u00a0<em>Baby Driver<\/em>, will play Tony. Although <em>Baby Driver <\/em>was a film packed full of music \u2013 with music forming a central part of the plot, this will be Elgort\u2019s first time singing in a film. He was first heard singing on a global stage when he entered a riff-off on The Late Late Show with James Corden and performed a rendition of \u2018Easy\u2019 by the Commodores.<\/p>\n<iframe title=\""Ansel\" elgort=\"\" singing=\"\" easy=\"\" width=\""200"\" height=\""113"\" src=\""https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UcThlhrcE9Y?feature=oembed"\" frameborder=\""0"\" allow=\""accelerometer;\" autoplay=\"\" clipboard-write=\"\" encrypted-media=\"\" gyroscope=\"\" picture-in-picture=\"\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/>\n<div class=\""page"\" title=\""Page\">\n<div class=\""layoutArea"\">\n<div class=\""column"\">\n<p>\u2018We looked for a year for Tony, then Ansel came in,\u2019 says Spielberg. \u2018Sometimes on camera he looks even younger than he is, then in the next second he looks like Marlon Brando. He has great power, and also vulnerability. He is boy and man and so facile at how often these qualities are interchangeable.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Plus, Rita Moreno, who won an Oscar for her performance playing Anita in the original film, will play a new character not included in the original \u2013 Valentina.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Valentina\u2019s backstory is 25 pages long,\u2019 says screenwriter Tony Kushner. \u2018It\u2019s like a little novel, starting with her early life in Puerto Rico, and it includes how Tony came to live in the basement of her drugstore. It spans the first half of the 20th century.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Maddie Ziegler, famous for dancing in popular-music artist Sia\u2019s music videos, will also be cast as a Jet.<\/p>\n<iframe title=\""Sia\" big=\"\" girls=\"\" cry=\"\" video=\"\" width=\""200"\" height=\""113"\" src=\""https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4NhKWZpkw1Q?feature=oembed"\" frameborder=\""0"\" allow=\""accelerometer;\" autoplay=\"\" clipboard-write=\"\" encrypted-media=\"\" gyroscope=\"\" picture-in-picture=\"\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/>\n<h2>How the new adaptation came to be<\/h2>\n<p>Steven Spielberg had been hoping to produce an adaptation, but the opportunity arose after he completed filming on\u00a0<em>The Post<\/em>, which was released at the end of 2017.<\/p>\n<p>There had to be a reason to recreate it though. \u2018We didn\u2019t want to fix what wasn\u2019t broken, but we did want to justify why we were telling the story again,\u2019 says Spielberg. \u2018Part of that is the cast. On stage the actors have largely not been Hispanic, and in the 1961 movie they\u2019re in their 30s, and many who were portraying the Puerto Ricans are white. I wanted to cast it authentically, to ensure that the actors playing the Shark boys and girls were one hundred percent Latinx, and young.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>It was a tricky task though \u2013 and a very slow casting process. \u2018We have a completely, one hundred percent Latinx cast of Sharks, men and women,\u2019 says Spielberg. \u2018There\u2019s no one who\u2019s not Latinx. This was non-negotiable for us, and it\u2019s one of the reasons it took us a year to cast.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>After the screenplay had been written, they assembled a production team with a choreographer and initiated a worldwide casting search.<\/p>\n<h2>Who has written the screenplay for the 2021 adaptation of\u00a0<em>West Side Story<\/em>?<\/h2>\n<p>Award-winning playwright Tony Kushner (who is best known for his play <em>Angels in America<\/em>, which examines the AIDS crisis in America in the 1980s) will adapt the screenplay from the original 1957 Broadway script, which was written by Arthur Laurents. He will be leaving the musical numbers intact, and the story will be in fact more similar to the original musical than to the 1961 film.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018<em>West Side Story<\/em> redefined the form as much as Rogers and Hammerstein had redefined it a generation before,\u2019 says Kushner. \u2018I was moved by how many of our current struggles Steven felt could be explored in this 60- year-old masterpiece \u2013 I guess moved and troubled, in a good way, because the racism, xenophobia, the legacies of colonialism, the effects of poverty, the evils that catalysed the creation of the musical, are still very much with us.\u2019<\/p>\n<h2>Who is the choreographer for the 2021 adaptation?<\/h2>\n<p>Tony Award-winning choreographer Justin Peck was brought on board to design the visuals for\u00a0<em>West Side Story. <\/em>He is New York City Ballet\u2019s resident choreographer and artistic advisor.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018New York City Ballet was one of the homes of Jerome Robbins [the 1961 film\u2019s choreographer], and in performing his choreography for the piece, I know it inside out,\u2019 says Peck. The role of Bernardo in\u00a0<em>West Side Story\u00a0<\/em>was the first lead he danced as a young performer at the School of American Ballet.<\/p>\n<h2>Who will be performing on the soundtrack to the new\u00a0<em>West Side Story\u00a0<\/em>adaptation?<\/h2>\n<p>Composer David Newman will arrange and adapt <a href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/leonard-bernstein\/"\"><strong>Leonard Bernstein<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s original score, and Gustavo Dudamel, musical director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Paris Opera, will conduct the orchestra during the film\u2019s recording sessions.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018<em>West Side Story<\/em>, for me, as for all of us in the music world, is part of my DNA,\u2019 says Dudamel. \u2018Every single melody in it is so natural and easy for anyone to process. Naturally, it felt right to work with the New York Philharmonic, Bernstein\u2019s own orchestra and have the musicians be part of the new chapter of this masterpiece.\u2019<\/p>\n<h2>When is the new\u00a0<em>West Side Story\u00a0<\/em>being released and where can you watch it?<\/h2>\n<p><em>West Side Story\u00a0<\/em>will be released on 10 December 2021 and is hoping to receive a release in cinemas.<\/p>\n<p>The film has been forced to be rescheduled numerous times due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, but the official release date was announced at the Oscars ceremony in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>This year marks the 60th anniversary since the release of the original film in 1961.\u00a0 (You can watch the original film on\u00a0<strong><a
