14 Peaks: Nothing is Impossible <\/em><\/strong><\/a>is Netflix\u2019s latest hit documentary, chronicling the journey taken by Nepali mountaineer Nirmal \u2018Nims\u2019 Purja in his quest to summit all 14 of the world\u2019s 8000-metre peaks in seven months \u2013 breaking one of mountaineering\u2019s toughest records.<\/p>\n

The documentary has landed on Netflix<\/strong><\/a> with epic footage of Purja\u2019s journey accompanied by a breathtaking orchestral score by British-Indian composer Nainita Desai<\/strong>. She previously scored the Oscar 2020 nominated film For Sama<\/em>, and has written for both the small and big screens.<\/p>\n\n<p>The score was recorded at London\u2019s Abbey Road Studio 1 by the <a href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/tag\/London-Contemporary-Orchestra-reviews\/"\"><strong>London Contemporary Orchestra<\/strong><\/a>, under the baton of conductor Robert Ames. It\u2019s by far their first foray into soundtracks, having previously performed scores for video games, documentaries and films such as\u00a0<em>Phantom Thread.\u00a0<\/em>The orchestra\u2019s leader,\u00a0Galya Bisengalieva, plays the violin solos heard throughout the score.<\/p>\n<p>These solo lines are paired with lush, broad orchestral playing. \u2018I knew that strings would be a huge feature, because they could handle the vast landscapes of the region, but I could also bring it down to a single emotion, with intimacy and warmth,\u2019 says Desai.<\/p>\n<p>In approaching the score, she admits she was initially intimidated by the scale of the production and the stories being told on screen. \u2018The huge challenge I faced was to match the scale of the imagery with the music,\u2019 she says. \u2018There are 14 mountains to summit here. The challenge is to represent the climbing of each mountain in a different way.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Choosing the instrumentation for the score was somewhat easier. \u2018I knew right from the outset that the sound palette would be symphonic,\u2019 she says. \u2018I\u2019m using the orchestra in a very contemporary modern way to appeal to a universal audience, but also to bring out elements of the cultural heritage.\u2019<\/p>\n<iframe title=\""Spotify\" embed:=\"\" peaks:=\"\" nothing=\"\" is=\"\" impossible=\"\" from=\"\" the=\"\" netflix=\"\" film=\"\" width=\""100%"\" height=\""380"\" frameborder=\""0"\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\""autoplay;\" clipboard-write=\"\" encrypted-media=\"\" fullscreen=\"\" picture-in-picture=\"\" src=\""https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/album\/1jlc2wAaTKjutA0LLxMI7w?si=tmOcJAS6T4-jrQaWmNxESg&utm_source=oembed"\"\/>\n<p>She researched the sounds of the landscapes and communities depicted on screen, particularly the soundworlds and traditional music of Nepal. \u2018I love to research,\u2019 she says. \u2018Writing the score for this film was like preparing for my own mountain climb.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018You do hear smatterings of plucked scores that are local to the region. The way the strings are played has a raspiness and a rawness to them, to get across the local instrumentation you find in Nepalese music.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>It was the wild expanses and complex human emotions at the centre of Purja\u2019s story which provided inspiration for Desai\u2019s score.
