Here, we\u2019ve picked ten of the better-known ones and given them our marks out of five.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1. <a href=\"\/\/www.classical-music.com\/topic\/mozart&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener noopener noreferrer\" noreferrer=\"\">Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart<\/a><a href=\"&quot;http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0086879\/&quot;\">:\u00a0<em>Amadeus<\/em> (1984)<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>We\u2019ll begin with the most famous composer biopic of them all \u2013 not the first, but perhaps one of the glossiest and most thought-provoking. That\u2019s genius. The film itself is about the meeting of two rather more creative minds \u2013 and, subsequently, various bodily parts \u2013 as the designer invites the composer and his family to live at her villa near Paris in the 1920s.<\/p>\n<ul><li><strong><a class=\"&quot;standard-card-new__article-title&quot;\" href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/did-coco-chanel-have-an-affair-with-igor-stravinsky\/&quot;\">Did Coco Chanel have an affair with Igor Stravinsky?<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul><p>Opening with a vivid reconstruction of the riotous <strong><a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/stravinskys-rite-spring-guide-and-best-recordings\/&quot;\"><em>Rite of Spring<\/em><\/a><\/strong> premiere, Jan Kounen\u2019s cinematography is impressive throughout \u2013\u00a0though, to be honest, any director who can\u2019t make a film about Chanel visually arresting really shouldn\u2019t be in the business. But <a href=\"&quot;http:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/topic\/igor-stravinsky&quot;\"><strong>Stravinsky<\/strong><\/a> himself, played by Mads Mikkelsen, presents real problems.<\/p>\n<p>If, based on the evidence of photos and written accounts, you\u2019ve always thought of the Russian composer as being small, wiry and with an acidly sharp wit, think again \u2013 here he\u2019s tall, muscular, and dismally, dismally dull.<\/p>\n<p>Still, his magic works on Chanel. Forget about the music, let\u2019s cut to the chase \u2013 who was the mysterious unnamed woman with whom he was passionately in love? Anton Schindler, <a href=\"&quot;http:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/topic\/ludwig-van-beethoven&quot;\"><strong>Beethoven<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s first biographer and secretary, embarks on a quest for the \u2018Immortal Beloved\u2019, taking on the role of detective to track down his friend\u2019s old flames.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"&quot;http:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/topic\/ludwig-van-beethoven&quot;\"><strong>Beethoven<\/strong><\/a> in all his guises \u2013 from youthful romantic to older moody composer, blighted by <strong><a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/how-did-beethoven-cope-going-deaf\/&quot;\">deafness<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 Gary Oldman is convincing but strangely unmemorable. And, although this is a gift of a story, Bernard Rose\u2019s film is unexpectedly bland, not to mention historically unsound.<\/p>\n<p>The fabrication for plot purposes of a will leaving all <a href=\"&quot;http:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/topic\/ludwig-van-beethoven&quot;\"><strong>Beethoven<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s money to his \u2018Immortal Beloved\u2019 sets warning bells ringing that the final unveiling might be unconvincing. But perhaps that\u2019s why Alain Corneau\u2019s film about the French Baroque composer and viol player \u2013 a legend in his time \u2013 is so outstanding.<\/p>\n<p>Beautifully filmed, impeccably acted, <em>Tous les matins du monde<\/em> tells the story of Marais\u2019s difficult relationship with his teacher, Sainte-Colombe, as imagined by novelist Pascal Quignard. Sainte-Colombe (Jean-Pierre Marielle), so the story goes, could make the viol imitate all the sounds of a human voice, from a young girl\u2019s sigh to an old man\u2019s cry.<\/p>\n<p>Marais, in contrast, had all the virtuosic technique but didn\u2019t understand the true nature of music. So begins a lifelong struggle between the two, complicated when Marais (G\u00e9rard Depardieu when old, his late son Guillaume Depardieu when young), falls for his teacher\u2019s daughter. As one might expect from Burton, Wagner comes over as a wily, determined, frankly chippy so-and-so, but as a rather insecure figure, too.<\/p>\n<p>But his struggles against his own insecurities, rival composers, political views and several ample-cleavaged lovers <em>en route<\/em> to triumph at Bayreuth make for a long but spectacular watch.
