{"id":15993,"date":"2022-08-03T13:20:18","date_gmt":"2022-08-03T11:20:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/?p=125359"},"modified":"2022-08-03T13:38:08","modified_gmt":"2022-08-03T11:38:08","slug":"jwst-the-new-cartwheel-galaxy-image-shows-us-how-stars-are-born","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/bbcsciencefocus\/rss_feed\/jwst-the-new-cartwheel-galaxy-image-shows-us-how-stars-are-born\/","title":{"rendered":"JWST: The new Cartwheel Galaxy image shows us how stars are born"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\"><\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Jason Goodyer\n                \t\t<\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Wednesday, 03 August 2022 at 12:00 am<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>Images captured by the high-precision instruments on the <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/space\/james-webb-space-telescope\/&quot;\">James Webb Space Telescope<\/a> (JWST) have given astronomers a close-up view of the Cartwheel Galaxy \u2013 a bizarre ring galaxy that formed following a collision between a large spiral galaxy and a smaller neighbouring galaxy.<\/p>\n<p>The images were captured by the telescope\u2019s Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) and Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) and are sharp enough to show the individual stars scattered throughout the galaxy\u2019s spectacular form.<\/p>\n<p>The blue dots seen in the images are individual stars, or areas of star formation, while the red dots show areas rich in hydrocarbons.<\/p>\n<p>The Cartwheel Galaxy was previously captured by the <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/space\/hubble-space-telescope-how-far-can-see\/&quot;\">Hubble Space Telescope<\/a>, but the JWST\u2019s capability to detect infrared light has now uncovered new insights about its structure and life cycle.<\/p>\n<p>The galaxy is located about 500 million light-years from Earth in the Sculptor constellation. Both rings are expanding outwards from the site of the collision, much like the ripples created by throwing a stone into a pond. At its centre is a <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/space\/black-holes\/&quot;\">black hole<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The bright core is crammed with raging clouds of hot dust and is littered with young star clusters.
