That is, older people tend to be calmer, warmer, friendlier and more trusting than they were when they were younger \u2013 which is hardly consistent with the stereotype of an ageing curmudgeon. In fact, a Swiss study of\u00a0people over 80 years old\u00a0noted their remarkable composure and nonchalance toward old age<\/a> \u2013 a trait the researchers called \u2018senior coolness\u2019.<\/p>\n Another perspective comes from the Danish-American psychoanalyst Erik Erikson, whose eight-stage theory of life development<\/a> described the final stage \u2013 from roughly 65 years\u00a0old\u00a0and upwards \u2013 as a psychological battle between integrity and despair.<\/p>\n If older people view their lives with disappointment and regret, he said,\u00a0then despair will win, thus fuelling bitterness.
