BBC Science Focus exclusive: Great Ormond Street Hospital’s second annual photography competition celebrates massive medical advances. <\/p>

To coincide with rare disease day (28 February), Great Ormond Street Hospital<\/a> has announced its winners of the second annual \u2018a moment of discovery<\/a>\u2018 image competition.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s winners are Dr Daniyal Jafree<\/a>, Radu Polschi, Aleksandra Letunovska and Reem Al-Saadi, for their image \u2018A 3D snapshot of the hidden highways in childhood kidney cancer\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been working at UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health for 7 years, and in that time, two things have become very clear.\u201d Dr Jafree tells\u00a0BBC Science Focus<\/i>. \u201cFirstly, it\u2019s so important that we communicate our research to the people we ultimately hope to benefit: patients, their families and the public.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSecondly, none of our research would be possible without a big team of scientists and clinical professionals, all with different backgrounds and experiences, all sharing the common goal of improving diagnosis and treatment for childhood diseases and cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other stand-out images include human nose cells infected with COVID<\/a>, and an AI program that can detect wrist fractures in X-rays using the latest technology.<\/p>\n

These images will be on display at\u00a0the entrance of the Zayed Centre for Research into Rare Disease in Children<\/a> (ZCR), London, United Kingdom, from 28th February 2023.<\/p>\n
