Now, a study carried out by researchers based in Paris, France, and Chicago, USA, has found that <a href=\"\/\/www.cell.com\/current-biology\/fulltext\/S0960-9822(23)00156-2&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">getting a good night\u2019s shuteye can also boost our bodies\u2019 immune response to vaccinations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To investigate the effect of sleep on vaccine effectiveness, the team combined the results of seven studies looking at jabs for influenza and hepatitis A and B and compared the antibody responses of those who slept a normal, healthy amount of seven to nine hours a night with those who slept six or less.<\/p>\n<p>In each study, the participants\u2019 sleep was measured in a lab environment, at home via a sleep-tracking smartwatch or self-reported.<\/p>\n<p>They found that sleeping less than six hours per night significantly reduced immune response to vaccination. However, the difference was most prominent in men, perhaps due to women\u2019s fluctuating sex hormones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know from immunology studies that sex hormones influence the immune system,\u201d said lead researcher <a href=\"\/\/www.crnl.fr\/en\/user\/248&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">Karine Spiegel<\/a> from the French National Institute of Health and Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn women, immunity is influenced by the state of the menstrual cycle, the use of contraceptives, and by menopause and post-menopausal status, but unfortunately, none of the studies that we summarised had any data about sex hormone levels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The negative effect was also more pronounced in those aged 18 to 60 compared to the over 65s.
