{"id":25480,"date":"2023-03-27T23:15:41","date_gmt":"2023-03-27T21:15:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/?p=140077"},"modified":"2023-03-27T23:37:09","modified_gmt":"2023-03-27T21:37:09","slug":"omega-3-fatty-acid-may-prevent-sight-loss-breakthrough-study-finds","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/bbcsciencefocus\/rss_feed\/omega-3-fatty-acid-may-prevent-sight-loss-breakthrough-study-finds\/","title":{"rendered":"Omega-3 fatty acid may prevent sight loss, breakthrough study finds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\"> Initial studies in mice have been highly successful. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Jason Goodyer\n                \t\t<\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Monday, 27 March 2023 at 12:00 am<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body> <p>A form of the fatty acid omega-3 could help to stave off the deterioration in vision caused by Alzheimer\u2019s disease, diabetes and several other disorders, researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago have found.<\/p>\n<p>In a series of studies carried out on mice, the team found that a form of the omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) known as lysophospholipid DHA, or LPC-DHA, can be absorbed by the retina where it can help to combat loss of sight.<\/p>\n<p>The research was presented at <a href=\"\/\/discoverbmb.asbmb.org\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">Discover BMB<\/a>, the annual meeting of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, in Seattle.<\/p>\n<p>In healthy eyes, DHA found in the retina helps to maintain photoreceptors \u2013 specialised neurons that convert light into electrical signals and send them to the brain via the optic nerve.<\/p>\n<p>Patients with Alzheimer\u2019s disease, diabetes, age-related macular degeneration and several other disorders have low levels of DHA, which often results in a loss of vision.<\/p>\n<p>The form of DHA commonly found in fish oil supplements is the closely related triacylglycerol dHA, or TAG-DHA. However, this form cannot pass from the bloodstream to the retina.<\/p>\n<p>The team found that mice bred to show similar symptoms to those found in early-onset Alzheimer\u2019s disease showed a 96 per cent increase in retinal DHA after six months of being fed a daily LPC-DHA supplement. TAG-DHA supplements given over the same time period had no effect on retinal DHA levels.<\/p>\n<p>The dosage used in the study was equivalent to about 500 milligrams in humans \u2013 an amount commonly found in fish oil capsules.
