Various studies suggest that breathing coupled with conscious movement can <a href=\"\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3573542\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">balance the autonomic nervous system<\/a> (ANS), <a href=\"\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3573542\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">reduce cortisol levels<\/a> and provide a sense of wellbeing.<\/p>\n<p>The ANS contains the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. When you\u2019re stressed, the sympathetic nervous system releases stress hormones, which can trigger the \u2018fight or flight\u2019 response, causing an imbalance in the ANS. But research carried out by the Boston University School of Medicine, New York Medical College and Columbia University, found that <a href=\"\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0306987712000321?via%3Dihub&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">yoga has the potential to decrease stress by balancing the ANS.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In yoga, your breathing must be controlled, and by breathing slowly and deeply you can increase the activity of the parasympathetic nervous system, which can help you feel calmer. Breathing deeply <a href=\"\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5709795\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">sends an activation signal to the parasympathetic nervous system<\/a>, responsible for the \u2018rest and digest\u2019 response, which counteracts the effects of the \u2018fight or flight\u2019 response.<\/p>\n<p>A 2019 study in Australia found that another benefit of yoga is connectedness; a shared experience and a safe space to connect with oneself and others.
