{"id":31028,"date":"2023-07-21T17:00:53","date_gmt":"2023-07-21T15:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/?p=149213"},"modified":"2023-07-21T17:39:48","modified_gmt":"2023-07-21T15:39:48","slug":"new-ai-could-unlock-viral-dark-matter-of-next-pandemic","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/bbcsciencefocus\/rss_feed\/new-ai-could-unlock-viral-dark-matter-of-next-pandemic\/","title":{"rendered":"New AI could unlock viral \u2018dark matter\u2019 of next pandemic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\"> The AI could have predicted the emergence of the covid variants. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Noa Leach\n                \t\t<\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">2023-07-21 15:00:53<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body> <p><a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/future-technology\/artificial-intelligence-ai\/&quot;\">Artificial intelligence<\/a> could reduce the threat of future viral pandemics, according to the researchers who have developed a machine learning-based early warning system.<\/p>\n<p>The scientists from the Scripps Research Institute have trained the system to track the emergence and evolution of epidemic viruses \u2013 like the <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/news\/everything-you-need-to-know-about-b-1-617-2-the-indian-variant-of-coronavirus\/&quot;\">SARS-CoV-2 variants<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This system could be used to track viral pandemics in the future, using an \u2018unprecedented\u2019 approach \u2013 according to the paper\u2019s senior author <a href=\"\/\/www.scripps.edu\/faculty\/balch\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">Professor William Balch<\/a>. \u201cThere are rules of pandemic virus <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/nature\/evolution\/&quot;\">evolution<\/a> that we have not understood but can be discovered,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In a new paper published in <em>Cell Patterns<\/em>, the scientists show that this system could have predicted the emergence of new COVID variants weeks before the World Health Organisation (WHO) designated them as <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/news\/what-is-long-covid\/&quot;\">threats<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the big lessons of this work is that it is important to take into account not just a few prominent variants, but also the tens of thousands of other undesignated variants, which we call the \u2018variant dark matter\u2019,\u201d said Balch.<\/p>\n<p>The AI was able to identify the key variants emerging from the \u2018dark matter\u2019, meaning those that significantly affected viral spread and mortality rates.<\/p>\n<p>When applying the AI to data from the COVID pandemic, the machine was able to track genetic changes in the variants, as well as the virus\u2019 adaptations to lockdowns, mask wearing, <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/news\/covid-vaccine-uk\/&quot;\">new vaccines<\/a>, increasing human immunity, and competition between different variants.<\/p>\n<p>The scientists hope their findings show that similar early warning systems could track the evolution of future viral pandemics in real-time.
