The basic up-and-down motion is caused by the string unwinding from the central axle, which causes the yo-yo body to spin rapidly. When it reaches the end of the string, the angular momentum of the body gives it the energy to wind the string up again, bringing the yo-yo back.

This works just as well in microgravity, providing you keep the string taut. In 2012 NASA astronaut Don Pettit took a yo-yo on board the International Space Station and demonstrated several tricks, including some he invented that actually require weightlessness.

Read more:

How would fizzy drinks behave in space?

Do 3D printers work in space?

Can you blow bubbles in space?

Is it possible for chickens to lay eggs in space?

Asked by: Blake Houston, via email

To submit your questions email us at questions@sciencefocus.com (don’t forget to include your name and location)

[1
["https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/42/2023/12/heres-what-happened-when-an-astronaut-took-a-yo-yo-into-space.jpg",1200,800,false
https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/42/2023/12/heres-what-happened-when-an-astronaut-took-a-yo-yo-into-space-150x150.jpg",150,150,true
https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/42/2023/12/heres-what-happened-when-an-astronaut-took-a-yo-yo-into-space-300x200.jpg",300,200,true
https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/42/2023/12/heres-what-happened-when-an-astronaut-took-a-yo-yo-into-space-768x512.jpg",768,512,true
https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/42/2023/12/heres-what-happened-when-an-astronaut-took-a-yo-yo-into-space-1024x683.jpg",800,534,true],"1536x1536":["https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/42/2023/12/heres-what-happened-when-an-astronaut-took-a-yo-yo-into-space.jpg",1200,800,false],"2048x2048":["https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/42/2023/12/heres-what-happened-when-an-astronaut-took-a-yo-yo-into-space.jpg",1200,800,false
