Here\u2019s a selection of some of our favourite stories from the fields of health, space, medicine and technology that made headlines this year.<\/p><h2 id=\"h-how-to-have-an-optimal-day-according-to-research-published-this-year\">How to have an optimal day, according to research published this year<\/h2><h3>Set your bedroom temperature right<\/h3><p>The importance of sleep was made clear by a number of studies this year. Getting a good amount of deep sleep is crucial to almost every aspect of our lives, so how can we get more of it? In August, a study by scientists at Harvard Medical School, in the US, found that sleep is most efficient and restful for older adults at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/news\/scientists-discover-the-optimal-temperatures-for-more-restful-sleep\">temperatures between 15\u201325\u00b0C<\/a> (60\u201377\u00b0F).<\/p><h3>Enjoy a snooze to boost your brain<\/h3><p>If you\u2019re enjoying a deep sleep when your alarm rings, there\u2019s no need to stop \u2013 according to a study published in October. They found that people who hit the snooze button and had an extra 30 minutes in the land of nod were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/news\/snoozing-alarm-may-boost-brain\">more likely to perform better in cognitive tests <\/a>immediately after waking than those who got up straight away. Turns out if you snooze, you <em>don\u2019t <\/em>lose.<\/p><h3>Brush your teeth \u2013 and book your next trip to the dentist<\/h3><p>If you\u2019re not doing this already, then a study published in September might change your mind. Published in the <em>Journal of the National Cancer Institute<\/em>, the study found that people who visit the dentist regularly, and who have more of their natural teeth before receiving a diagnosis of either head or neck cancer, were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/news\/good-teeth-survival-cancer\">more likely to survive the disease<\/a>.<\/p><h3>Forget 10,000 steps&#8230; walking just 4,000 a day could be enough<\/h3><p>If you fall short of your daily walking targets, cardiology research published in August might put a spring in your step. The research revealed that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/news\/forget-10000-steps-walking-just-5000-is-enough-to-lower-your-risk-of-death-says-science\">health benefits start when you take as few as 3,867 daily steps<\/a> \u2013 including reducing your risk of death.<\/p><h3>Keep good news to yourself<\/h3><p>You might be able to make a good day even better \u2013 if you don\u2019t tell anyone about it. Contrary to popular belief, keeping secrets may not be a bad thing (as long as they\u2019re the right sort). <\/p><p>In November, a study found that keeping good news a secret <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/news\/good-news-secrets-wellbeing\">actually boosts your energy levels<\/a> \u2013 especially if you do eventually intend to spill the beans. Delaying by hours, days or even weeks could help prolong the joy involved in sharing your good news.<\/p><h2 id=\"h-the-weirdest-news-of-2023\">The weirdest news of 2023<\/h2><h3>Scientists unlocked creative minds with annoying questioning<\/h3><p><em>Friends <\/em>fans, do you remember the episode where Phoebe helps the gang make decisions by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ckJ3gJXWyZk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">asking quick-fire questions<\/a>? Well, neuroscientists did the same this year with test participants to understand what makes the creative brain tick. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/news\/scientists-can-predict-how-creative-you-are-based-on-your-instincts-and-your-tastes-says-new-study\">Your better ideas, they suggest, may be the ones you think of faster<\/a>.<\/p><h3>Snakes were discovered cartwheeling<\/h3><p>Researchers identified a species of snake with an unusual gymnastic ability: it can do cartwheels. The dwarf reed snake was observed coiling itself into an S-shaped loop before using its tail to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/news\/snakes-can-cartwheel\">push off the ground and cartwheel 1.5m (4.9ft)<\/a> in under five seconds. It\u2019s thought the behaviour is a bid to startle predators (and any scientists watching it).<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Dwarf Reed Snake pushes its tail off the ground and launches its body forward to propel it into a cartwheel motion. &#8211; Image credit: Evan Quah<\/figcaption><\/figure><h3>Scientists create the ultimate swearword<\/h3><p>Parents and prudes were thrilled when mathematician Sophie Maclean wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/news\/heres-the-worlds-ultimate-swearword-according-to-maths\">an algorithm that produced the \u2018ultimate swearword\u2019<\/a>, albeit one without any lewd connotations. The acceptable expletive? \u2018Banger\u2019, or \u2018ber\u2019 for short.<\/p><h3>T. Rex found to have lips<\/h3><p>Contrary to the teeth-baring portraits of the dinosaurs we\u2019ve grown used to, a study published in <em>Science <\/em>showed that <em>Tyrannosaurus re<\/em>x <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/article\/t-rex-lips-new-study-suggests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">probably had juicy (but scaly) lips<\/a>. These smackers would have protected their giant gnashers from wear and tear.<\/p><h2 id=\"h-this-year-s-medical-breakthroughs\">This year&#8217;s medical breakthroughs<\/h2><h3>New tech &#8216;broke into&#8217; a brain<\/h3><p>A breakthrough method that uses ultrasound and bubbles to \u2018trojan horse\u2019 drugs across the blood- brain-barrier spells <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/news\/ultrasound-alzheimers-treatment-delay-ageing\">good news for potential Alzheimer\u2019s treatments<\/a>. \u201cIt opens up this door of basically unlimited options,\u201d Dr Sophie Morse, the study\u2019s lead author told <em>BBC Science Focus <\/em>in September.<\/p><h3>Unborn babies were found to inherit \u2018greedy gene\u2019 from their father<\/h3><p>Scientists from the University of Cambridge discovered that fetuses use a gene (IGF2) inherited from their fathers to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/news\/unborn-babies-inherit-greedy-gene-from-father-scientists-discover\">force their mothers to release more nutrients<\/a> during pregnancy. It was the first evidence that a dad\u2019s gene, nicknamed the \u2018greedy gene\u2019, allows his unborn child to send these demanding signals.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2023\/03\/Map-of-fruit-fly-larva-brain-0054a34.png\" alt=\"Map of fruit fly larva brain\" class=\"wp-image-138643\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Neuroscientists produced the first complete wiring map of an insect brain. &#8211; Image credit: MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology<\/figcaption><\/figure><h3>The mind was mapped like never before<\/h3><p>2023 was a big year for neural cartography. In March, researchers at the University of Cambridge pieced together the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/news\/neuroscientists-map-insect-brain\">links between every single neuron in the brain of a fruit fly larva<\/a>. Meanwhile, scientists at the Allen Institute for Brain Science, in the US, were beginning to map the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/news\/brain-atlas-3000-cells\">3,000-plus cell types that make up the human brain<\/a>, with the first blueprint published in October.<\/p><h3>Faecal transplants began in the UK<\/h3><p>This year, the first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/news\/uk-poo-transplant-trial\">faecal transplant clinical trials began in the UK<\/a> as the first trials in the US came to a close. In November, the US trials found that the transplants rid patients of drug-resistant superbugs. Meanwhile, the UK trials are using a tablet (nicknamed a \u2018crapsule\u2019) to deliver the transplants to volunteers with liver disease.<\/p><h3>Anti-ageing technology made several big leaps<\/h3><p>A breakthrough study by scientists at the Duke University School of Medicine, in the US, identified the human body\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/news\/reverse-ageing-caused-by-stress\">natural mechanism for reversing biological ageing<\/a>. The research showed that biological age is more flexible than chronological age, and can be reduced \u2013 as long as we give our bodies a chance to recover from stressful events.<\/p><p>Later in the year, a group of studies published in <em>Nature <\/em>suggested that transfusions of a young person\u2019s blood, and injections of an age-defying hormone, could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/news\/young-blood-rejuvenates-aging-brains\">help to rejuvenate ageing brains<\/a>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"647\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2023\/07\/Ilustratoin-of-gravitational-waves-d7f4523.jpg\" alt=\"Illustration of gravitational waves\" class=\"wp-image-147666\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">New gravitational ripples turned known physics on its head. &#8211; Image credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 id=\"h-2023-in-tech-and-physics\">2023 in tech and physics<\/h2><h3>ChatGPT-4 changed AI forever<\/h3><p>While ChatGPT was still enthralling first-time users, its creators, OpenAI, unveiled a major upgrade to the chatbot this year. Called GPT-4, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/news\/chatgpt-4-announcement\">the upgraded version allows users to input image prompts<\/a> (not just text) and, apparently, is less likely to invent facts. The new model is currently only available to paid subscribers, while ChatGPT remains open to the public.<\/p><h3>A machine was made that can reader your mind<\/h3><p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/news\/this-machine-can-read-your-mind-and-translate-how-you-see-the-world\">machine that reads your thoughts<\/a> became more science fact than science fiction, thanks to neurotechnologists at the University of Texas at Austin, USA. The decoder is the first wireless and non-invasive machine to do this, using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to measure the changes in blood flow around your brain \u2013 translating ideas into continuous, natural language.<\/p><h3>Computers became architects<\/h3><p>June saw the announcement of yet another AI project: Neuralangelo, a piece of software <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/news\/neuralangelo\">capable of generating lifelike virtual replicas of intricate 3D models<\/a>, such as buildings and sculptures. Eventually, it could enable developers to import detailed objects into virtual environments like video games.<\/p><h3>A key theory of gravity became reality<\/h3><p>Fifteen years of theories and painstaking observations culminated in the discovery<br\/>of the first evidence of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/news\/gravitational-waves-physics\">low-frequency gravitational waves rippling through the Universe<\/a>. But the other 11 months of 2023 were also filled with fascinating discoveries, dramatic explosions and strange sightings&#8230;<\/p><ul><li><strong>5 January<\/strong>: The James Webb Space Telescope catches sight of some of the oldest barred galaxies ever discovered. Two of the six <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/news\/james-webb-space-telescope-milky-way-galaxies-early-universe\">date back to when the Universe was 3.4 billion years old<\/a>, a quarter of its current age.<\/li><li><strong>12 January<\/strong>: A black hole is spotted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/news\/hubble-space-telescope-black-hole-star-doughnut\">twisting a star into a doughnut<\/a> and \u2018eating\u2019 it.<\/li><li><strong>3 April<\/strong>: NASA introduces the next crew to go the Moon. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/news\/artemis-mooon-astronauts-crew\">crew of Artemis II<\/a>, the first crewed mission to orbit the Moon in 52 years, is named. It includes Victor Glover (the first person of colour to go to the Moon), Reid Wiseman, Christina Koch (the first woman to go to the Moon) and Jeremy Hansen.<\/li><li><strong>14 April<\/strong>: ESA launches the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/space\/juice\">Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE) mission<\/a>. Described as a \u201cperfect launch\u201d, JUICE was sent to search the gas giant and three of its moons for evidence of life. Five months after JUICE\u2019s launch, the JWST detected carbon in the salty liquid ocean on Europa, confirming the moon as the most promising host for alien life.<\/li><li><strong>20 April<\/strong>: SpaceX\u2019s Starship <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/news\/in-pictures-spacexs-starship-explodes-in-spectacular-fireball\">explodes in a fireball<\/a> shortly after lift off. Called \u2018dark earth\u2019, the incredibly fertile soil created by deposits such as charcoal from cooking fires left by Amerindian people in Brazil, could help us <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/news\/dark-earth-deforestation\">grow more climate-resilient forests faster<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>July<\/strong>: Australian researchers published a paper outlining a potential use for honey from the bizarre honeypot ant: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/news\/bizarre-australian-ant-honey-used-in-indigenous-medicine-inspires-powerful-new-antibiotics\">creating powerful antibiotics<\/a>. In doing so, they acknowledged the thousands-of-years-old medicinal use of the ant by Australia\u2019s Indigenous people.<\/p><p><strong>August<\/strong>: After 25 years of research, a woman born without a womb became the first in the UK to have a successful womb transplant. The donated organ came from her sister.
