The next major meteor shower is the Leonid meteor shower, which peaks on the night of 17/18 November.

After that, meteor spotters will be looking forward to a particularly favourable 2023, Geminid Meteor Shower which occurs in December.

There have been many major moonless meteor showers occurring in 2023, providing favourable conditions for spotting one.

In 2023, all the major annual meteor showers have occurred near to new Moon, meaning the Moon will be both dimmer and below the horizon for most of the night.

This has been good news for meteor observing, as a bright full Moon will seriously diminish the number of meteors you can see during a shower’s peak activity.

In this guide we’ll reveal when the best meteor showers are, and the specific dates you should be observing them.

Another factor affecting how many meteors you can expect to see is how prolific the meteor shower is, which is measured by its Zenithal Hourly Rate (ZHR).

This is the number of meteors you would see under perfect conditions, if the shower was coming from directly overhead.

In reality, the number you will see will be significantly less, closer to half.

Here are the dates of the meteor showers where the Moon will be most favourable.
