It\u2019s a sign that auroral activity is on the increase, and <a href=\"navto:\/\/index\/24\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"navto:\/\/index\/24\">aurora expert Dr Melanie Windridge <\/a>explores what\u2019s behind these more powerful displays and how they are intimately linked to longer-term activity on the Sun. Pete Lawrence looks at <a href=\"navto:\/\/index\/26\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"navto:\/\/index\/26\">how to read weather forecasts and charts <\/a>if you\u2019re an astronomer, in a bid to avoid rain and cloud, as well as some less well-known effects the atmosphere can challenge us with.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">When weather doesn\u2019t cooperate, there\u2019s not much we can do about it. However, there are other factors that conspire to interrupt our observing plans which we can control. Long-time Canadian astronomer Ron Brecher considers these \u2013 such things as exposure to the wind and how to make the most of available time \u2013 <a href=\"navto:\/\/index\/21\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"navto:\/\/index\/21\">here<\/a>, to put forward the Make-or-Break equation, an adaptation of the famous Drake equation.
