There would be measurements of the planet, say, two times a day and you\u2019d have to predict what\u2019s happening in between \u2013 that\u2019s not accurate. Hope looks at the whole planet, surveying different layers of the atmosphere at different times of day, so we get full coverage. This is something that hasn\u2019t been done before with such accuracy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif has-ccp-white-color has-text-color\">Hope began science observations in May 2021 and the team has now released the first set of maps from its Atlas of Mars, tracking atmospheric and temperature changes during the day. It is a tectonic crack, created four billion years ago as the planet cooled. <\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif has-ccp-white-color has-text-color\">The <strong>Tharsis <\/strong>region (pictured, below) covers a geological hotspot that has been pushing the terrain upwards for billions of years, creating a 7km-high plateau. It is home to three of Mars\u2019s largest shield volcanoes: <strong>Ascraeus Mons, Pavonis Mons <\/strong>and <strong>Arsia Mons <\/strong>(from north to south). <strong>Olympus Mons <\/strong>(pictured, below left with clouds around the summit), the Solar System\u2019s largest volcano, lies to the west of Tharsis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"no-tts wp-block-image article-in-image photo\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1276\" height=\"671\" src=\"https:\/\/dj9jqhxgw9833.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/sites\/77\/2022\/05\/556f6482-3f31-47e8-837e-3cbbacef30f1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"no-tts wp-image-31910\" srcset=\"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/77\/2022\/05\/556f6482-3f31-47e8-837e-3cbbacef30f1.jpg 1276w, https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/77\/2022\/05\/556f6482-3f31-47e8-837e-3cbbacef30f1-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/77\/2022\/05\/556f6482-3f31-47e8-837e-3cbbacef30f1-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/77\/2022\/05\/556f6482-3f31-47e8-837e-3cbbacef30f1-768x404.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1276px) 100vw, 1276px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"article-subhead has-ccp-white-color has-text-color\"><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-ccp-white-color\">A global view of Mars<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif has-ccp-white-color has-text-color\">\u201cAlthough the mission was designed to study the atmosphere, the surface is also a very important component, and we need to understand how the two interact together,\u201d says Al Matroushi.<span> To do this, Hope conducted a \u2018capture\u2019 orbit, where it came very close to the planet, allowing it to take higher resolution images of the surface. It then moved out to its science orbit, which is wide to <\/span>view the whole globe at once (below). \u201cThat was exciting because you can do a lot of surface science \u2013 you\u2019re able to see the rocks and the sand and study different regions, including <strong>Valles Marineris <\/strong>and <strong>Tharsis,\u201d <\/strong>says Al Matroushi<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"no-tts class=\"article-subhead has-ccp-white-color has-text-color\"><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-ccp-white-color\">Taking the temperature of the Red Planet<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif has-ccp-white-color has-text-color\">The Emirates Mars Infrared Spectrometer (EMIRS) looks at infrared light from Mars, generating heat maps of the entire planet at various points in the day. \u201cWe\u2019re looking into the globe\u2019s temperature and understanding its variability, as that impacts the climate,\u201d says Al Matroushi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif has-ccp-white-color has-text-color\">This set of <strong>heat maps <\/strong>(below) was created in July 2021, in the season of spring for the Red Planet\u2019s northern hemisphere, and it shows the change in temperature across the whole planet over an average day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"no-tts wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"no-tts
