However, shortly after it was launched on 10 September 2022, astronomers noted it was extremely bright. The IAU\u2019s Center for the Protection of the Dark and Quiet Sky from Satellite Constellation Interference (CPS) has now collated measurements of the satellite, finding it reaches around magnitude +1.0 at its brightest \u2013 similar to Antares, the 15th-brightest star in the sky. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">In addition, BW3 uses the same radio frequencies as terrestrial mobile phones, but isn\u2019t bound by requirements to adhere to radio quiet zones around astronomical observatories. \u201cFrequencies allocated to cell phones are already challenging to observe in, even in the radio quiet zones we have created for our facilities,\u201d says Philip Diamond, director general of the Square Kilometre Array Observatory \u2013 a huge new radio telescope which began construction on 5 December 2020. \u201cNew satellites such as BlueWalker 3 have the potential to worsen this situation and compromise our ability to do science, if not properly mitigated.\u201d <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">AST SpaceMobile, which operates BW3, has started talks with the IAU, while the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has created a special office to address satellite constellations, ensuring they perform their important roles in global communications without affecting the scientific and cultural importance of the night sky. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">\u201cBlueWalker 3 is a big shift in the constellation satellite issue and should give us all reason to pause,\u201d says Piero Benvenuti, director of the IAU CPS.  <a href=\"http:\/\/cps.iau.org\">cps.iau.org<\/a> <\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n<h5 class=\"has-text-align-center sans-serif article-subhead\">Comment <strong><strong>by Chris Lintott <\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n<div class=\"no-tts wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"no-tts alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/77\/2023\/01\/20160411SkyatNight-1687-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"no-tts wp-image-40802\" width=\"204\" height=\"204\" srcset=\"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/77\/2023\/01\/20160411SkyatNight-1687-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/77\/2023\/01\/20160411SkyatNight-1687-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/77\/2023\/01\/20160411SkyatNight-1687-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/77\/2023\/01\/20160411SkyatNight-1687-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/77\/2023\/01\/20160411SkyatNight-1687-1536x1536.png 1536w, https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/77\/2023\/01\/20160411SkyatNight-1687-2048x2048.png 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 204px) 100vw, 204px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">If AST SpaceMobile has its way, there will be 243 satellites as bright as BW3. OneWeb, partly owned by the British government, plans for 648. Amazon\u2019s Project Kuiper anticipates 3,276 in orbit, while SpaceX already has more than 3,000 aloft and plans many more. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">These satellites will alter our view of the night sky, interfere with our attempts to spot Earth-threatening asteroids and, according to disturbing new research, may have a significant effect on the upper atmosphere as satellites burn up. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">The solution is for governments to stop, now, and work out how we want to use the precious space above our heads.
