Equipment: Planewave CDK-17 Dall-Kirkham reflector, Paramount ME mount, SBIG STXL-11002 camera.\" \/> <\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Sculptor Galaxy, also known as NGC 253 or the Silver Dollar Galaxy, is one of the brightest galaxies visible in the night sky and is located 13 million lightyears away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">It is a spiral <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/a-guide-to-galaxies\/\">galaxy<\/a> that can be seen in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/southern-hemisphere-cheat-sheet\/\">Southern Hemisphere sky<\/a> in the Sculptor constellation and was discovered by astronomer Caroline Herschel in 1783.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">It is part of the Sculptor Group \u2013 a group of galaxies similar to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/local-group-guide-galaxy-neighbourhood\/\">Local Group<\/a>, in which our own galaxy the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/what-is-the-milky-way\/\">Milky Way<\/a>, the Andromeda Galaxy and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/galaxies\/triangulum-galaxy\/\">Triangulum Galaxy<\/a> reside \u2013 and is its brightest member.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image-handler__container image-handler__container--full\"> <img class=\"wp-image-50595 align size-full image-handler__image image-handler__image--full no-wrap js-lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.immediate.co.uk\/production\/volatile\/sites\/25\/2020\/07\/07-Starbust-Galaxy-in-Sculptor-Terry-Robison-8589b4c.jpg?quality=90&amp;resize=620%2C414\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1334\" alt=\"NGC 253 - Starburst Galaxy in Sculptor Terry Robison (Canada). Equipment: RCOS 10\u2033 telescope at f\/9.1, AstroPhysics AP-900 mount, SBIG STL-11000 camera, L-RGB-Ha composite, 34 hours total exposure<\/span><\/figcaption><span class=\"im-image-caption\"><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Sculptor Galaxy is so bright because it\u2019s what\u2019s known as a \u2018starburst galaxy\u2019, meaning it is undergoing very high rates of star formation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">While the Sculptor Galaxy appears slightly edge-on as seen from Earth, it is not quite as edge-on as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/galaxies\/needle-galaxy\/\">Needle Galaxy<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/galaxies\/ngc-891-edge-on\/\">NGC 891<\/a>, for example, and its spiral structure is certainly visible in astrophotos.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The galaxy\u2019s thick dust lanes are clearly visible too.
