Equipment: SBIG STF-8300M, Astro-Tech AT12RCT at f\/8 2432mm.\" title=\"Sombrero_NGC 4594_005\" \/> <\/p>\n<p>The Sombrero Galaxy is an edge-on galaxy located 28 million lightyears away in the Virgo constellation, and with a mass of about 800 billion Suns, is one of the most massive objects in the Virgo Galaxy Cluster (which also contains the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/galaxies\/markarians-chain\/\">Markarian\u2019s Chain<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>M104, as it is formally known in the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/messier-catalogue\/\">Messier Catalogue<\/a>, is nicknamed the Sombrero Galaxy due to its edge-on appearance, which makes it look like the famous broad style of hat.<\/p>\n<p>Like many other edge-on galaxies such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/galaxies\/needle-galaxy\/\">Needle Galaxy<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/galaxies\/ngc-891-edge-on\/\">NGC 891<\/a>, the spiral structure of the Sombrero Galaxy is hidden from us here on Earth, due to the galaxy\u2019s tilt.<\/p>\n<p>What is visible in images of the Sombrero Galaxy, however, is the thick dust lane bisecting the bright galactic centre.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image-handler__container image-handler__container--full\"> <img class=\"wp-image-93220 align size-full image-handler__image image-handler__image--full no-wrap js-lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.immediate.co.uk\/production\/volatile\/sites\/25\/2021\/06\/sombrero-galaxy-0e1b6f0-e1624285323877.jpeg?quality=90&amp;resize=620%2C347\" width=\"1200\" height=\"672\" alt=\"A Hubble Space Telescope image of the Sombrero Galaxy.
