Equipment: Kitt Peak&#039;s visitor centre&#039;s 16&quot; sct and my Canon EOS350D.\" title=\"Triffid_M20_001\" \/> <\/p>\n<p>Given the propensity for nebulae to be named after well-known objects and shapes (see the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/nebulae\/california-nebula\/\">California Nebula<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/nebulae\/the-cats-paw-nebula\/\">Cat\u2019s Paw Nebula<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/nebulae\/pacman-nebula\/\">Pacman Nebula<\/a>, among others), you might be forgiven for expecting the Trifid Nebula to bear a likeness to the marauding alien plants found in John Wyndham\u2019s classic post-apocalyptic novel <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Day_of_the_Triffids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Day of the Triffids<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The reason for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/beginners-guide-nebulae\/\">nebula<\/a>\u2018s informal nickname, however, is a little less pop-culture, and instead refers to the term \u2018trifid\u2019 meaning \u2018split into three segments or lobes\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>M20, or NGC 6514, to give the Trifid Nebula its formal astronomical names, is a stellar nursery in our home <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/a-guide-to-galaxies\/\">galaxy<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/what-is-the-milky-way\/\">Milky Way<\/a>, located about 9,000 lightyears from Earth in the constellation Sagittarius.<\/p>\n<p>It is often paired in astrophotos with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/nebulae\/lagoon-nebula\/\">Lagoon Nebula<\/a>, also in Sagittarius, given the two objects\u2019 apparent proximity in the sky.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image-handler__container image-handler__container--full\"> <img class=\"wp-image-12089 align size-full image-handler__image image-handler__image--full no-wrap js-lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.immediate.co.uk\/production\/volatile\/sites\/25\/2019\/02\/M8-M20-Gabor-Szendroi-fd2b807.jpg?quality=90&amp;resize=620%2C413\" width=\"1814\" height=\"1209\" alt=\"Trifid and Lagoon Nebulae by G\u00e1bor Szendr\u00f1i, Kendig-peak, Hungary.\" title=\"Lagoon_M8_022\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"caption-hold\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"caption-copy\"><i class=\"icon-arrow icon-camera-circle\"><\/i> Trifid and Lagoon Nebulae by G\u00e1bor Szendr\u00f1i, Kendig-peak, Hungary.
