Although it might sound like an interesting sight, to appear reddish during a lunar eclipse the Moon has to enter Earth\u2019s <em>umbra<\/em> \u2013 its central shadow in space.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly during this event only a few per cent of the Moon\u2019s surface will have entered the umbra before moonset in the UK on 19 November, 2021. However, that doesn\u2019t mean there\u2019s nothing to see.<\/p>\n<p>From the UK a <em>penumbral<\/em> lunar eclipse (when the Moon enters Earth\u2019s outer shadow in space) will begin just over an The west coast of North Africa will receive a glimpse of an eclipsed moonset and the west coast of Australia will see an eclipsed moonrise.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>29 March 2025: the UK and Europe<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Type: Partial Solar Eclipse<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>As much as 47% of the Sun will be blocked by the Moon from the U.K. during this event. It will be visible most easily in Europe, though extreme southeastern Atlantic Canada will be able to try for an 84% eclipsed sunrise.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>7 September 2025<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Type: Total Lunar Eclipse<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A 1 hour 22 minute lunar totality will be on show to Africa, India, China and Australia as the entire Indian Ocean gets its decade-best view of a \u2018Blood Moon\u2019.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>21 September 2025: New Zealand<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Type: Partial Solar Eclipse<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>An eclipsed sunrise that sees about 72% of the Sun blocked by the Moon is going to be visible from New Zealand \u2013 and that\u2019s it!<\/p>\n<h2><strong>17 February 2026: Southern Chile\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Type: Annular Solar Eclipse<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>About 96% of the Sun\u2019s center will be obscured for just 2 minutes 20 seconds, but only to a remote part of Antarctica. Southern Chile will get the merest of partial solar eclipses. This will be an eclipse almost exclusively for penguins and whales.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>3 March 2026<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Type: Total Lunar Eclipse<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>About 58 minutes of lunar totality will be observable from the U.S., Australia and East Asia, though since the Moon\u2019s southern limb only just makes it inside Earth\u2019s shadow, our satellite may remain fairly bright.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>12 August 2026: Iceland and Spain<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Type: Total Solar Eclipse<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A sky full of auroras during totality in Iceland!? That is very unlikely. More probable is that the \u2018Land of Fire and Ice\u2019 will be clouded-out. However, while a 2 minutes 10 seconds totality will occur 25\u00ba above the horizon from Iceland\u2019s Sn\u00e6fellsnes peninsula, in northern Spain it will be just 10\u00ba up, and decreasing to a risky eclipsed sunset from Majorca.
