Credit: Stellarium<\/span><\/figcaption><span class=\"&quot;im-image-caption&quot;\"\/><\/div>\n<p>Zubenelgenubi is actually a <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/double-binary-stars-guide\/&quot;\">double star<\/a> containing the components \u03b1\u00b9 Librae and \u03b1\u00b2 Librae, which are mag. +5.1 and mag. +2.8, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a binary star, with the two stars in orbit around each other. They lie at the same distance of 77 lightyears away from Earth and both have similar velocity and direction in space.<\/p>\n<p>As a consequence, they are very likely to be a physical pair.<\/p>\n<p>According to a 2016 decision by the International Astronomical Union, these days the name \u2018Zubenelgenubi\u2019 refers specifically to the brighter component, Alpha-2.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What does Zubenelgenubi mean?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"&quot;p2&quot;\">Like many stars, the name Zubenelgenubi was created during the major Arabic influences on astronomy, around 1,000 years ago (for more on this, read our guide to <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/skills\/introduction-arabian-astronomy\/&quot;\">Arabian astronomy<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p2&quot;\">Translated, Zubenelgenubi means \u2018the southern claw of the Scorpion\u2019, which harks back to the time when Libra was not a separate constellation but the front part of the constellation of Scorpius, the Scorpion.<\/p>\n<p>As seen from Earth, Zubenelgenubi sits just above the <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/ecliptic-tracing-sun-path-across-the-sky\/&quot;\">ecliptic<\/a> in the sky so can often be found near the Moon in a wonderful <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/skills\/conjunctions-in-night-sky-how-see\/&quot;\">conjunction<\/a>, or even being occulted by the Moon.
