making it one of the lightest exoplanets ever found.<\/p>\n<p>It orbits about 4 million kilometres from Proxima Centauri, which is less than a tenth of the distance between <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/guide-to-the-planets-mercury\/&quot;\">Mercury<\/a> and the Sun in our own Solar System.<\/p>\n<p>This puts its orbit in a region between the star and the habitable zone, which is the region around a star where liquid water can pool on the surface (a precursor for life as we know it).<\/p>\n<p>Proxima d takes 5 days to complete wobbles in the motion of a star caused by the planet\u2019s gravitational pull tugging on the star as it orbits.<\/p>\n<p>But Proxima d is so light that its gravity causes Proxima Centauri to move
