Provided you know where and when to look, if you gaze up at the night sky you should be able to see a Lyrid meteor during the period of activity.<\/p>\n<p>But what is the Lyrid meteor shower, and when is the best time to see it?<\/p>\n<p>The Lyrid meteor shower occurs every year around 14 \u2013 30 April, and in 2022 the best time to see a Lyrid will be between <span meteors occur when Earth passes through the debris spread around the orbit of comet C\/1861 G1 Thatcher.<\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p2&quot;\">Activity typically begins on 16 April and continues through to 25 April.<\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p2&quot;\">For most of this period, meteor rates are quite low in activity, reaching a peak on the night of 22\/23 April, when a zenithal hourly rate of 18 meteors per hour can be expected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p2&quot;\">The zenithal hourly rate is quoted as the number of meteors expected to occur over an hourly period, adjusted to assume perfect conditions and the shower\u2019s radiant position \u2013 the area of sky where the shower trails appear to emanate from \u2013 directly overhead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p2&quot;\">In practice, visual hourly rate As the night progresses the radiant\u2019s <\/span>altitude increases, which helps matters.<\/p>\n<p>When planning to observe a meteor shower, it makes sense to pay attention to what the Moon is doing, as a bright <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/moon\/full-moon\/&quot;\">full Moon<\/a> will hamper how many meteors you can see.<\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p2&quot;\">For the 2022 Lyrid meteor shower, the Moon will be at last quarter on the morning of <strong>23 April<\/strong>, but because it\u2019s spring the angle made by the <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/ecliptic-tracing-sun-path-across-the-sky\/&quot;\">ecliptic<\/a> with the eastern horizon in the run-up to dawn is shallow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p2&quot;\">As a consequence, the Moon won\u2019t really interfere with the 2022 Lyrids, rising as dawn is well underway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p2&quot;\">This would normally mark the The path of light across the sky is known as a meteor trail.<\/p>\n<p>Most meteor showers are associated with comets, but some are linked with asteroids, such as the <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/how-to-see-the-geminid-meteor-shower\/&quot;\">Geminid meteor shower<\/a>, which is associated with <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/3200-phaethon-asteroid-causes-geminid-meteor-shower\/&quot;\">3200 Phaethon<\/a>. As a comet repeatedly orbits the Sun, it spreads dust around the orbit.<\/p>\n<p>Earth passes through these dust streams as it orbits the Sun, causing particles to vaporise in the atmosphere. When this happens, the number of trails we can see increases.<\/p>\n<p>We experience peak activity of meteor showers when Earth is passing through the most dense section of the stream.<\/p>\n<p>Meteor trails appear to come from a specific area of the sky, which is known as the \u2018radiant\u2019. This slowly moves over the duration of the shower.<\/p>\n<p>The constellation in which peak activity appears to occur is what gives each meteor shower its name.
