black hole, it settles into an <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/accretion-disk\/&quot;\">accretion disk<\/a> due to the angular momentum present in the system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p1&quot;\">Matter in these accretion discs becomes hot, reaching temperatures of above one million degrees Centigrade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p1&quot;\">This hot gas emits high-energy radiation, which can launch \u2018winds\u2019 from the accretion disc that move at high speeds away from the black hole.<\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p1&quot;\">These winds can potentially push gas out of galaxies \u2013 causing galactic \u2018outflows\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p1&quot;\">In this way black holes with accretion discs, known together as Active Galactic Nuclei, can
