This can go on for around 10 billion years. During this time it is said to be a \u2018main sequence\u2019 star.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"&quot;p1&quot;\"><strong>2. Shell burning<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"&quot;p2&quot;\">A star is said to move off the main sequence when it transitions from burning hydrogen to fusing helium. This often happens in layers surrounding the dead core and so astronomers refer to it as \u2018shell burning\u2019.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"&quot;p1&quot;\"><strong>3. Red giant<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"&quot;p2&quot;\"><span class=\"&quot;s1&quot;\">The star gets through its helium one hundred <\/span>times faster than it did its hydrogen. This creates huge amounts of outwards pressure and it surges out into its planetary system. <span class=\"&quot;s1&quot;\">Its surface would reach<\/span> out to about where Earth is now.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"&quot;p1&quot;\"><strong>4. Planetary Nebula<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"&quot;p2&quot;\">Helium burning is unstable. It sends shockwaves through the star and convulsions shake it <span class=\"&quot;s1&quot;\">a<\/span>part. A few of these events, each 100,000 years apart, create nested shells called a <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/planetary-nebula\/&quot;\">planetary nebula<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"&quot;p1&quot;\"><strong>5. White dwarf<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"&quot;p2&quot;\">A core of carbon and oxygen \u2013 the products of helium fusion \u2013 is left at the centre.
