Those of us who enjoy stargazing and observing the night sky can\u2019t always plan when and where we\u2019re going to get the chance to gaze upwards.<\/p>\n

Busy schedules, light pollution<\/a>, the weather: sometimes finding even just 30 minutes to stand and stare up at a clear, dark night sky and take in the planets, stars and constellations can be a feat in itself.<\/p>\n

So when you do find the time, you\u2019ll need to know what\u2019s visible in the night sky, and the best things to look out for when stargazing.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s our stargazing guide to what you can see in the night sky tonight. Our guide is centred around what\u2019s visible from the UK, but all northern hemisphere observers should be able to use it, with the odd adjustment to stated times.<\/p>\n

In our guide, we use\u00a0Universal Time (UT) and British Summer Time (BST). UT is the standard time used by astronomers around the world. BST is one hour ahead of UT<\/p>\n

We also use RA (Right ascension)\u00a0<\/span>and dec. (declination).\u00a0<\/span>These coordinates are the night sky\u2019s equivalent of longitude and latitude, describing where an object is on the celestial <\/span>\u2018globe\u2019. What\u2019s visible in the night sky tonight?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

All Month<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Noctilucent clouds<\/a> season runs from late May through to early August, July being an excellent month to look out for these elusive high-altitude ice clouds.<\/p>\n

Monday 4 July<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Happy aphelion day! Earth reaches the point in its year-long orbit when it is farthest from the Sun today.<\/p>\n

Wednesday 6 July<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Minor planet 14 Irene reaches opposition<\/a> today, at the eastern edge of the handle of the Teapot asterism<\/a> in Sagittarius<\/a>. Shining at mag. +9.8, it\u2019ll be tricky to identify Irene\u2019s star-like dot against the backdrop of Milky Way.<\/p>\n
