asteroid.<\/p>\n<p>The successful impact took place at 23:14 UTC on 26 September, scientists at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, Maryland, announced.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/news\/watch-nasa-dart-spacecraft-asteroid-impact-live\/&quot;\">DART mission was live streamed online<\/a> so that viewers all around the world could watch the final moments as the spacecraft approached its target.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-missions\/nasa-dart-mission\/&quot;\">DART mission<\/a> is a strand of NASA\u2019s defence strategy, its purpose to see whether the course of an <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/asteroids\/&quot;\">asteroid<\/a> or <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/a-guide-to-comets\/&quot;\">comet<\/a> could be deflected, should it be heading towards Earth.<\/p>\n<iframe title=\"&quot;NASA's\" asteroid moonlet called Dimorphos measuring 160m in diameter.<\/p>\n<p>Dimophus orbits a 780m asteroid called Didymos.<\/p>\n<p>Following the successful impact, the DART mission team will now observe Dimorphus using ground-based telescopes to measure how much DART has altered its orbit.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s thought that DART will have shortened Dimorphism\u2019s orbit by about 1%, which would amount spacecraft\u2019s <strong>Didymos Reconnaissance and Asteroid Camera for Optical navigation (DRACO)<\/strong>, and showing the final moments before DART crashed into its target.<\/p>\n<p>Together with a guidance, navigation and control system that works in tandem with the spacecraft\u2019s <strong>Small-body Maneuvering Autonomous Real Time Navigation (SMART Nav)<\/strong> algorithms, these systems journey to crash into the moonlet at about 22,530km per hour.<\/p>\n<p>In 4 years, the European Space Agency\u2019s Hera project will observe both Dimorphos and Didymos to analyse the effects of the collision; specifically studying the resulting crater and measuring the moonlet\u2019s mass.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt its core, DART represents an unprecedented success for planetary defence, but it is also a mission of unity with a real benefit for all humanity,\u201d says NASA Administrator Bill Nelson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs NASA studies the cosmos and our home planet, we\u2019re also working to protect
